Actually you specify which "environment" gets loaded by setting the DISPLAYMANAGER variable to your preferred well... display manager in /etc/conf.d/xdm. xdm is the service starting the x server which in turn loads your preferred graphical environment.
You basically get a text login prompt upon boot instead of the graphical one?
xdm service might not be on the boot runlevel
