3G Modem - WCDMA only (Solved)

Postby mahalay » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:27

Hello gurus,

Downloaded and installed Sabayon 6 today on my laptop, was able to use mobile internet using my 3G usb modem, however, there seems to be no option to set the modem in WCDMA-mode only (or UMTS only). I'm stucked being connected to 2g network only because it's signal is stronger than 3G. Previously on my windows machine, I can set it to connect to WCDMA only.

Hope someone out there can help me.

Kind regards,

Mahalay

Newer version of NetworkManager have this option already

If you're using KDE then do the following:

1. Click on the Network Management widget icon in the System Tray on the Panel.

2. Click on the 'Manage Connections...' button.

3. Click on the 'Mobile Broadband' tab.

4. Select the connection from the list, and click on the Edit... button.

5. Enter the password to open the KDE wallet you set up previously.

6. On the 'Mobile Broadband' tab, under Advanced, click on 'Any' on the Type box.

7. You will see a menu with the following options: Any; 3G (UMTS/HSPA); 2G (GPRS/EDGE); Prefer 3G; Prefer 2G. Select the option you require.

8. Click on the OK button to close the window.

9. Click on the OK button to exit the Network Management configuration window.

Hi Fitz,

Thanks for replying back. Unfortunately I prefer Gnome over KDE. Since (probably) Gnome's Network Manager, doesn't have the ability to select the network mode, is there a way to do it in console at least?

It does have this ability.

I can access to it in this way:
(I have Italian localizations, so the names could be slightly different)

1) right-click on the Gnome Network Manager applet

2) select Edit connections

3) Mobile Broadband tab, select your connection and press the Edit button

4) In the newly opened window, select the Mobile Broadband tab

5) here you can see the Advanced section that Fitzcarraldo was talking about.

You can use sakis3g, automatically recognizes the connection type and key, it only takes usb_modeswitch. Here is the download link: http://www.sakis3g.org/#downloading
