Can't login after upgrade.

Postby just-a-guest » Sat Jul 30, 2011 19:43

A couple of hours ago, updated the system (not all but most of it) and tried to download it. During booting came a new login-manager. Experiments for five minutes while trying to enter the system revealed that it see when I type right the password, and simply reload and asking a username and password again.
I tried to press Alt-F*, to launch the console but useless. Then tried my hand just to go through all the keys to do cause a crash, that I actually succeeded: at this point login-manager crashing for a couple of seconds, at which time I can log into the console. Actually what I logged.
In the system itself is also a mess - launch startx, then tried compiz - does not start. Tried to start fluxbox (or whatever it is spelled) - also gives an error (
Shorter counting on your help. :)

Hi, welcome to the Sabayon Linux Forums and Community

The correct shortcut for switching TTY is Ctrl+Alt+F<number>, not Alt+F<number>.

Could you tell us which Desktop Environment are you running? KDE4, Gnome or something else?
Do you have the Limbo repository enabled?
Which parts of your system were updated, was the kernel involved?

Using Gnome. Kernel wasn't updated, just a few program (compiz, and exaile. Seems was one more.) but they was compiled with --deep options.
I've one idea about this case. When I try to login, then or get message, that my password/login was wrong; either (if I entered it right) my screen is shimmers, fade to dark for a few seconds, and I again find myself in a login screen. When logged (of course trough a console) I can't launch any window manager except X (nor compiz nor fluxbox). After attempt start compiz my screen shimmers again, and I again see X decoration.
So may be a reason, why I can't login is a fault of a window manager?
Please tell me, how to run compiz? Without X it erroring about unavailability screen. Now, with X started I sees this
Code: Select all
compiz (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

They were compiled using the --deep option?
Do you mean that you used portage (emerge) for the update process?

No, it is not bad, but if you have not much experience using portage, the problem could be related to it.
Have you any particular reason to use it instead of entropy (equo/sulfur)?

Just depends if you want a working x

I would read this link if you want to use portage
mixing: http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... nd_Portage

You can probably fix this, need to know what you did. typically you would run a emerge --sync and then install portage.
You need to remember the sabayon uses a newer version of portage, will have newer dependencies.
equo install portage
Not
emerge portage

My only goal here is to get your system working using entropy, you can read and learn to mix if you want.
I love gentoo and sabayon, I never mix or need to mix myself.

I think your x issue may be from updating compiz with a older portage version than sabayon uses, now you have mixed deps, is only a guess.
I would log in as root
equo update --force

equo install equo entropy

equo upgrade

equo deptest && equo libtest

with any luck, this might get you working again, if it does not, you may need to re-install compiz.
We can start looking at logs to see where the error is.

My system is gone
I just have seen many messages from a terminal from which X was launched about some error with D-bus. By the way -- it was upgraded too. So I decide to compile it again, did unmerge, and then emerge dbus. But during an emerge it said me, that it can't find some header file. O_o
Of course after reboot of a system many applications was unable to start, and network manager was one of them. Alas, I don't remember how to run connection to net from a terminal. :(
I think for now would be much easyer to reinstall system, moreover, that fortunately I have no in this partition any important data. But now I see, why many people recommend to do "/home" on a separate partition.
Thanks for the help, but "The analysis showed that in the patient's alcohol a blood was not detected"(C) :)

if you have not any particular reason to use emerge, in the beginning stick to entropy, when you get more confident with the package management, start learning portage, it will be less painful :)

Anyway, moving this topic to the portage section.
