New release plan - why?

Postby tekwyzrd » Wed Jul 27, 2011 22:39

I'm posting this with hope it may cause someone to reconsider the plan to eliminate the point releases. I still don't understand the reason for it. As I understand it, this year will bring Sabayon 7 and Sabayon 8. By the end of 2014 we will be seeing the release of Sabayon 20. WHY? Is abayon jumping on the idiot train with google chrome and firefox?

I'm agree with you. I don't understand the reason of such release numbering. Is a date style like 2011.10 better?

Just my humble opinion, I would like to praise the developers for their efforts and hard work.
Sabayon is just a young pup compared to the main distros, red hat , debian, gentoo etc..
If you look at the accomplishments they have achieved since birth, is incredible the amount of time and effort they put into sabayon. They made a few boo boo's here and there, they learned from there mistakes and constantly pushing forward.
All the time they have kept a bleeding edge basically stable desktop, earned a lot of respect in the linux community with their efforts.

What I see as a very important milestone for sabayon, is sabayon 5.5
The old timers know that we would hop branches, branch 3 to branch 4, 4 > 5 Did we notice that we no longer need to hop?
They nailed it with 5.5, they no longer need to hop branches to upgrade to the next level, still keep a stable system.

sabayon is now in line with, lets say gentoo.
I run gentoo, is it gentoo 6 or gentoo 12? No, it is gentoo and updated. There is no need for a version #

The way I see it, version # are only needed now for when a new release comes out, simply to cut down on the amount of updates.
If you need to download and install fresh, you want to download the newest to cut down on amount of updates to bring it current.

sabayon now has a chance to add some fun on releases. Could be 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, *yawn*
Could be version by the date, year and month. this makes sense, *yawn*
Could be a distinct name like debian does. wheezy and sid etc.. I dunno if this is a good idea.
But to add to that, we had a valuable member of the sabayon community pastebunz, sabayon named a app after him after we lost him in a fire.
We lost another member recently, Iwondertwo
What better way to celebrate his life, name a version release after him?
With all the creativity in the sabayon community, we could have a contest or vote for the name of the next release.

I am one who leans on the date release. as a distro-hopper I like the fact that on site I can see if my ISOs are current so I can replace them or if I know a ISO is about to drop I can clear away the old ones. As another example two live ISOs both of them based off of Arch linux 'archbang 20011.02 or CTKarch 0.7'. I believe that the dated releases add an air of professionalism to the distro.

BTW both of those ISOs are very good but the date and number thing is the same as the difference of 'hotmail/gmail' which one sounds more professional?

Great! It can be a great solution along the date of the release like sidux (aka aptosid) that use for its rolling release a live cd with the year.release numbering and a name inspired from history (acient greek gods I suppose). I propose year.month numbering and an important name for the linux history

I understand the reason for mantaining the Official Releases (5, 6 etc...) !
Remenber the begginer in Sabayon, the Noob. Sabayon can have the Official Release,
New users, newbies, not download weekly Daily Builds, they need the Official Releases! Even they dont known that Sabayon is rolling.
In the cases of Arch, Gentoo... The Philosophy of the distros is different, compared with Sabayon.
Gentoo and Arch are Distros for the typical advanced users, that know Rolling Release distros.
However, Sabyon is different. sabayon is a Out-of-Box Distro, forthe Beginner and also for the advanced.
I have in Mind that the Official NUmbered (or annual named, as Mandriva) releases are the only manner to divulgate sabayon.

I don't see the reason NOT to have Sabayon 7, 8, .... 20 or 2011.10, 2014.3 (and so on) AND to add the dear Sabayon ones, lost from time to time, or - why not? - of some 'heroes' that put their creativity in the Sabayon's service.
Not as a rule, but as a special release to celebrate them.

To me it would make more sense to use a version designation like 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4 with the major number denoting a major release and the .number denoting the quarterly release or a point number denoting the release month. It seems a bit odd to have four major releases a year. As for names, the names of the elements might be appropriate.
