No desktop Windows or icons in KDE desktop..... [Solved]

AAAArrrgghhh! The sound of a frustrated Scot...

I thought I had cured this with some re-installing and updating, but it seems I have not. When I try to boot into KDE 4.6.5 I am left with a mouse cursor and no desktop icons. The mouse pointer moves etc, but there is no start bar or anything, justa blank screen.?? Control and F11 gives me the KDE roof and base on the spinning cube, but nothing else. Basically its unusable.

I can boot into Gnome and xfce without any problems. All works well. So the question is.... What has happened to my KDE, and what if any, should I re-install? I have the latest Kernel installed 3.0.0 with the Nvidia drivers etc, its not the problem. I think there is something wrong in my KDE install. Its been unstable in this way for a couple of weeks now...But right now, I cannot access KDE at all....

Help please....

I don't know if it will solve your problem, but you could try regenerating all the KDE 4 configuration files. If you want to try that, open a Konsole window and enter the following command:

mv ~/.kde4/ ~/.kde4.bak

(You could instead do rm -rf ~/.kde4 but I've suggested renaming the directory .kde4 to .kde4.bak so you can revert if you want.)

Then reboot. KDE will then re-generate the ~/.kde4 directory and all its contents. You'll have to: reconfigure the Panel to re-add the Plasma widgets that you had on the previous Panel; re-specify your wallpaper; etc.

Sometimes some of the KDE configuration files become corrupted somehow and the easiest thing to do is reset everything.

I got totally fed up with the problem and read loads of info about other distro's losing the desktop with kde.
Finally I decided to go to the KDE website and read their install guide.

I dont like doing anything outside Sulfur, but figured nothing to lose..... I found this command under root and it worked. Back into KDE quickly.....

Happy again, although I have to reset my favourite stuff on the desktop. Its like brand new!
