new virtualbox version 4.1 [Solved]

Postby sedo_5 » Thu Jul 21, 2011 23:09

Hi everyone!
I've read that some days ago a new version of Virtualbox has been released...v4.1
I was wondering if someone has already tried it.
I searched it in equo, but last version is still 4.0.10 ...when do you think it will be available in sabayon official repo?
I've also been told (so i'm not very sure) that with this new version you don't have to worry about OSE and NON-OSE versions anymore, (i used to use the non-ose version, since i was highly interested in using usb)...is it true? i still don't get it...

Since when I switched to Sabayon, i've never been using virtualbox because of some harsh problems during install...(in some tutorials there was written to use portage and then to do some editing with modprobe and with the kernel-sources....but i'm an equo user and i'm not a great expert of kernel sources and modules...so i gave up at that time). Do you think it will become easier to install virtualbox with this new version?

Waiting for 4.1 to arrive in repos...
Thanks a lot in advance for your answers :)

Renzo

I don't think that VirtualBox has been difficult to install since entropy arrived. It's just necessary to make sure that you install virtualbox-bin, virtualbox-modules (to match your kernel) and the two X11 drivers (input and video - one to match your kernel). Entropy should take care of all the rest except editing
Code: Select all
/etc/conf.d/modules
and all you have to do is add this line
Code: Select all
modules="vboxdrv vboxnetflt vboxnetadp"
followed by a reboot.

While you're waiting for the next version, why not try the one in Entropy now?

Hi and thanks for your reply :)

I didn't say that Virtualbox is hard to install in entrpopy, but it's hard (at least it was the last time i tried) with portage !
Infact, I've just tried to install virtualbox 4.0.10 following your advices here (with entropy) and i must thank you a lot because it worked flawlessly!
Just one think i don't understand: why do you suggest me to install those two x11 drivers? it worked without them! what's their use?

Trying to sum it up: the last times i tried (vbox v3.x), everyone suggested (also some tutorials on the web) me to install it with portage...i don't know why but i went through a lot of problems (i also had to install sabayon-sources...and i'm not an expert). I also remember that, when i tried with portage, there was a big discrepancy between the vbox versions in portage repo and in sabayon repo (maybe that's why i had to try with portage, i.e. to have the latest version). Now i see that there's not such difference between portage and entrpy repo....In conclusion: maybe at that time it was a bit hard, but now things seem to be fine and i can use entropy! :)

Anyway, thanks :)

I'm glad it's working for you. :) I don't know what the drivers are required for but I have them on my machines - probably because they were in entropy and I wanted to make sure I had everything! Someone is bound to come along now and say that they're not needed. :) The ease of installing now is a sign of the incredible speed of change in Sabayon.

Those drivers are not needed: they are for the guest installation, i.e. you should only need to install those drivers in SL if SL is being run inside VirtualBox (e.g. your host OS is Windows or another Linux distribution and you are running SL inside VirtualBox).
