Can't install Sabayon 6 K from USB flash

Postby muselier » Sun Jul 17, 2011 7:04

When I boot the computer from USB HDD, and input "sabayon" after boot:, it shows below:
media not found.
could not find CD to boot, something else needed.
could not find the boot block device in.
So, who can tell me what should I do next?

Hi!
To help we need some more info.
1. You have a computer with internal hd and downloaded SL 6 (KDE or Gnome or?)?
2. Did you check md5sum?
3. Did you burn an image? On USB flash? Which program did you use?
4. Creating a live USB? With UNetbootin?
5. Could you please clarify:
I boot the computer from USB HDD, and input "sabayon

Thank you for concerning.
1. I have a Thinkpad R400, I have added another HD in the Diskdrive place by SLIM, and I downloaded SL 6 KDE from offical website.
2. I have checked md5sum, it's all right.
3. I burn it in my USB flash by UltraISO under Win 7. I have installed SL 4.5 K in the second HD successfully five months ago.
4. I boot my computer from my burned USB Flash, and it turned out " boot: ", I entered " help" and read the help parameters, so I input " sabayon " after "boot: ", then it show me the startup processing. But after almost 1 minutes, ie it mount the /dev/sda(1,5,6,7,8), /dev/sdb(1,2), /dev/sdc4. And then it shows:
media not found.
could not find CD to boot, something else needed.
could not find the boot block device in.
So, what's wrong? I had installed SL 4.5 K in the same way without any issue.

Hi!
There are many possibilities - we must eliminate one after another, so:
Could you test your USB flash on another computer? Maybe it's broken down or your installed Linux is e.g. incomplete.
I suppose boot flag is set on your USB flash.
You could use <tab> to see possible commands when you try to boot and a message is displayed.
If the command "cat" is available, please try:
Code: Select all
cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg

You only will see the last lines of the file grub.cfg, but then we know, that the important file grub.cfg exists.

I've tryed all the methods I can to install SL6 K on my computer, and now still failed.
when I boot my computer from USB, it was going like this:
1. boot:
and, I input "sabayon"
2. loading modules
............
3. activating mdev
...............
and 4. could not find the boot block device in.
could not find CD to boot. Something else needed.
media not found.
5. Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same, type "shell" for a shell, or "q" to skip...
So, I input "shell".
6. It shows:
root block device()::shell
To leave and try again just press Ctrl+D
BusyBox V.1.18.1. (2011-06-17 16:45:44 UTC) built-in shell (ash).
Enter "help" for a list of built-in command.
/bin/ash: can't access tty;
7. And I just want to look up the /boot/grub/grub.cfg, but there is no "boot" document. Why?
Then I used the same way, the same USB flash boot Gentoo 11, there is no problem.

Have you tried using UNetbootin? If not, I recommend you do, as I never have any trouble booting, and installing from, a pen drive on which I've installed SL LiveCD/DVD using UNetbootin (whether it has been created using UNetbootin for Windows or UNetbootin for Linux). Make sure the pen drive is formatted as FAT32, as specified on the UNetbootin Web site. Also, don't bother selecting 'Distribution'; select 'Diskimage' and specify the ISO you downloaded directly.
