Error running Virtualbox [Solved]

Postby ghkj21 » Fri Jul 15, 2011 19:30

So I'm setting up virtual box and I followed the steps provided here
http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title ... Virtualbox
all the way to step 18

when I clicked on the new system I get this error;
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

so I tried typing /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup into konsole;
TsunamiDream dragon # /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
bash: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: No such file or directory

I also went to root>etc>init.d> and I could not find vboxdrv setup in the folder.

any Ideas at what I should do next? where do I get that file?

Fixed;
I went to entropy store(advanced mode) and searched installed tab for "virtualbox" I then found the currently installed kernel modules and selected re-install.
30 seconds later my Virtualbox manager opened a boot screen and loaded my XP CD.
Crossing my fingers this will work and I can run Netflix. on my virtual desktop :)

ok from "press f8 to accept licence agreement" to first boot into windowsXP was 15 minutes in VirtualBox...
that is faster than I have ever "installed" it on any computer...
But it seems all the applications were missed Internet?... My progress continues...

so when the Virtual HD is set to 10GB or less the windows CD will do a minimal installation of 1.5GB
It is raw, bare bone, lacked shortcuts, drivers and applications.
when I set my Virtual HD to 20GB windows did a 2.8GB install which cot me on the internet and into chrome and playing Netflix within 5 minutes of booting. the larger install still only took 20 minutes wich again is faster than I have installed it on any PC. all interfaces and mouse actions are also allot smother with the larger install. Installing Nvidia drivers on the virtual OS also helped things allot too.

I have found many unanswered threads on the web about Virtual Machines and more specifically running Netflix on a Linux system. Hopefully many future lookers will find this thread useful.

Virtualbox sometimes is a long journey...
I get used to it by the way in my work because some Cisco VPN issues regarding some versions.

If you find the "answer" please add [Solved] to the subject.

This thread bring some light to newcomers. :mrgreen:
