X server problem [Solved]

Postby victorsk » Fri Jul 08, 2011 21:31

Hi everyone,

I just installed and updated most recent Sabayon 32-bit version but upon restart got the following error:

Code: Select all
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface).  It is likely that it is not set up correctly..."

Would anybody know how to fix such an error?

P.S. I've installed Sabayon on machine at work so my apologies in advance if I don't reply right away.

Nope, going to need some info, when you boot it, log in as root.
Code: Select all
 cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |pastebunz

This will produce a url, if you give us the url, we can see the error log. If you leave |pastebunz off, you will see the log.

Code: Select all
lspci |pastebunz

This will produce a list of your hardware, is a good chance you do not have correct drivers for your video card, without any info, is no way to suggest how to repair.

Hi,

Thank you so much for replying. I recognize this error when I tried to install other Gentoo-based system. But here is the link with an error:

Code: Select all
http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/6579

Strange thing is that installation worked and I was able to boot into X (gdm) Gnome desktop fine. It happened after I ran the updates and rebooted the system :(

Thanks again,
Victor.

Now I need to ask, what model of nvidia card do you have?
lspci would show this, If you have a card between 6100 to 7k series, is possible you are hit with a nividia-driver bug.
The seg fault error sounds right, does not look like the same error others have got, I was able to reproduce the bug, my Xorg.0.log looked different, though had seg fault.

Just a guess without the info of card model.

Code: Select all
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

remove this line
Code: Select all
"UseEvents" = true

Again, is only a guess, but only nvidia bug that would cause this, unless you have a older 4 or 5 series card, then you need legacy drivers.
Need info!

Hi!

Thank you so much for your suggestion. It worked! I successfully booted into Gnome environment after removing that line :)
