Problem with wifi in E17

Hello again.

Well, after using Sabayon with LXDE, I changed to Sabayon with E17. But this version doesn't connect to Internet.

The modules are installed and wlan0 appears. But I don't know how to configure my connection in the Terminal, or if I have to blacklist some modules (it seems that I don't need to do that).

E17 has a Connection Manager, but it's empty.

I don't know why does it happen, because in LXDE my connection was out-of-the-box.

Try the following in a Terminal window:

# rc-update del wicd default
# rc-update del connman default
# rc-update add NetworkManager default
# /etc/init.d/wicd stop
# /etc/init.d/connman stop
# /etc/init.d/NetworkManager start
# exit
$ nm-applet &

If that works, do the following in SL E17 to autostart nm-applet every time you boot:

1. Click on Start > Settings > Settings Panel > Apps > New Application and create a Desktop Config File called nm-applet.desktop (you don't enter the ".desktop"; E17 adds that itself).
2. Click on Start > Settings > Settings Panel > Apps > Startup Applications
3. Scroll down the list until you find nm-applet, and click on it to select it.
4. Click the Add button to add nm-applet to the Startup Applications list.
5. Click Apply and Close.

Neither wicd nor connman are installed. So I've added nm-applet to startup, and when I boot the system, networkmanager window appears and I can configure my connection.

But I haven't Internet yet. I don't know why, the ESSID is right, the wep key too... I've tried to blacklist some modules (rt2800 & rt2x00), but nothing.

What is your hardware? Please post the output of the commands lspci and lsmod.

Have you tried reducing the MTU (see my blog post Why can’t I access a specific Web site? for how to find out the MTU)?

Another thing you could try if the above does not work is disabling ipv6 (see Re: Slow web browsing, and internet connection in linux).

I think that I don't use MTU, and I haven't ipv6 enabled.

lsmod | grep rt2 shows rt2800usb, rt2800lib, rt2870sta, rt2x00usb and rt2x00lib.

There has to be a MTU.

What do you get if you enter the commands ifconfig and iwconfig as root user?

Ifconfig shows lo and eth0.

Iwconfig show lo, eth0 and wlan0. wlan0 says:

As I wrote in a previous post, please post the output of the lsmod command. (Not the output of lsmod | grep <etc.>)

Ok, I think that the problem is with E17, which doesn't detect my wifi connection.

So, I'll try with Gnome edition (Gnome 3 is very amazing). I'm downloading it now.
