No touchpad tapping on 5.5K

Postby nomad » Thu Jun 09, 2011 2:57

Am trying to install 5.5K on a Dell E1705 laptop. Right from the start, the touchpad tapping feature does not work, as in I cannot tap on the 'Next' button. I have to use the hardware left mouse button. I shut down and switch over to 5.4K and right from the start, the touchpad feature does work. I shut down and switch back to 5.5K and the touchpad tapping feature does not work. Does anyone have any similar problem on other brand laptops?

No guarantees, but I had a similar problem last year and solved it as explained in the following thread: Tapping does not work on a Synaptics touchpad [Solved]. Give that a try.

No joy with your technique. I duplicated the problem several more times with 5.4K and Knoppix versus 5.5K. I spent a couple days researching online and mucking around with synclient but nothing worked except older SL versions. The problem must be on how hardware is detected and initialized. Anyway...I 'fixed' the problem by installing Linux Mint 11 but even that distro gave me sound problem. I had to edit the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to include Intel hardware. This is a laptop so touchpad functionality is pretty much a must. But once again, the user must turn into a hacker to get things going...
