XFCE release 5.5 has no nvidia-settings

Postby bobmc » Sun May 22, 2011 18:15

FYI: While looking for clean install of 5.5, my Samsung 19" monitor worked on Gnome but not XFCE. The Samsung worked for the bootup splash screen but expanded vertically when the application graphics started. This prevented install or login because the widgets were not visible. However, I could do the install with a generic 17" monitor on my Zotac ION330 which has integrated Nvidia.

I noticed that Gnome had a Nvidia splashscreen but XFCE did not so I installed nvidia-settings and rebooted with the Samsung connected. Now it works.

BTW, I suggest to use a recently daily ISO because release 5.5 (which probably should be deprecated) has 380 updates.

XFCE and other Sabayon spins have no proprietary drivers, because they are intended to be lightweight and for experienced users, you can adjust the resolution and use the console manually with no Nvidia drivers, it just requires more experience.
To sum it up, you should stick to the KDE4/Gnome releases if you want a more user friendly experience.
No Nvidia proprietary drivers means open source ones, so no Nvidia splash screen.
If you want the proprietary drivers, the package you have to download is nvidia-drivers:
(as root)
Code: Select all
equo install nvidia-drivers

nvidia-settings is the Nvidia Control Center, the GUI to setup and tweak the proprietary drivers, it is optional, since it depends on the Nvidia Drivers, if you downloaded it, it automatically pulled the drivers package, so it worked.

The 5.5 release has a lot of updates but is very tested and stable, it is definitely not deprecated (at least not until the next official Sabayon release).

Of course if you cannot afford doing such a huge update, you will have to go for a daily release, but you could run into issues, they are not gone into testing, like the official release version did, even if the packages themselves are stable, so there is some probability to run into problems.

The 5.5 release has a lot of updates but is very tested and stable..

Well, I am sure it was at the time of release because the DVD worked fine after installation. However, I must add a few familiar applications and any one starts the big update. Portage is changed in the middle of the process, and everything after throws Python exceptions.

So, it seems to me that there is a "sliding window" of opportunity after a release where one should one install it and do periodic updates. Otherwise, one gets left behind as the Sabayon-Gentoo train keeps rolling forward.

That said, the Daily ISO worked better for me. I have no complaints except that the Bouncing Cow screensaver does not work. :bom:

the problems on the updates that you are mentioning are due to GCC updates and python updates, they are critical and need to be done with caution, if you get python exceptions, that means that it was done in a not properly correct way :)
I meant that when you use the official release, you are sure that you install it and it works, that being said, if you can't afford the updates or if you don't know exactly how to update python/GCC/whatever, the Dailies are there for you, but that does not mean that the official release is deprecated.
It is deprecated only once the newer release is out.
