Geforce 210 HDMI no Sound [Solved - kinda]

Postby mpmills » Mon Apr 25, 2011 19:00

I know that my PNY Geforce card will play sound via HDMI, the problem is that it wont. When I play it over the live dvd it plays fine, and if I load Microsoft XP/WIN7 it plays as well. But for some reason its not now...

Have you run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) as a normal user and reconfigured the Profile (Configuration tab), Input Devices, Output Devices, Recording and Playback? Apart from selecting the appropriate Profile on the Configuration tab, on the other tabs make sure that none of the channels are muted and that the channels' volume is turned up. If pavucontrol is not already installed, you can install it using the Entropy package manager.

Moving this thread to the Hardware shed (forum).

You mean 'System Sounds' on the 'Playback' tab of PulseAudio Volume Control? The 'System Sounds' tab controls the acknowledgement and warning sounds your desktop environment makes, not the output of multimedia applications. The audio settings for the latter are controlled on the 'Output Devices' tab. But, first of all, you need to check what is configured on the 'Configuration' tab. I assume you have two configurable Profiles on the 'Configuration' tab: one for HDMI audio and the other for analogue audio? Is the Profile for 'Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output' (or whatever it is: I don't have your hardware) set to 'On', and the Profile for 'Internal Audio' set to 'Off'? Try changing those.

If you have not already done it, the other thing I suggest -- in case something has changed in ALSA -- would be to run alsaconf as the root user, and set up the sound card again. Then run alsamixer and make sure all the sound channels are turned up and un-muted. It only takes a few minutes and won't do any harm.

I follow you up until alsaconf, because the sound is ran thru the HDMI on the video card would this be under alsaconf?

Should still be picked up by alsaconf, yes. Try it and see.

When you say "it doesn't find anything", are you referring to alsaconf? What exactly was the output?

no supported PnP or PCI card found.
Would you like to probe legacy ISA sound cards/chips?

ISA comes up the same and it quits, I disabled the onboard HD sound, thus I did this in Win7 and got sound thru HDMI

What do you see when you run alsamixer and press F6? Can you select anything? Is anything muted?
