Gnome 3.0 - April 6th

So who has all tried the gnome-shell? Like or Dislike? Personally I do not like it at all and will be avoiding it. I'm curious on the excitement level for gnome 3.0. If not, will you be switching desktop environments and if so, which one?

I haven't done much with Gnome shell and probably don't have a fair opinion of it as yet, but it really hasn't grabbed me so far. It feels intrusive, if that makes any sense.

I have recently started playing around with Xfce and am liking it a lot. I haven't decided that I will switch, but it is looking increasingly likely.

I don't like it that much either, even if, to be fair, I tried it only a little.
My biggest concern is "why a simple and working concept like a desktop, that proved to be nice, simple, efficient and easy to understand should ever be revolutionized?".
So I think that with an high probability, I will be switching desktop environment.

I will give Gnome3 a chance before doing this, if it will really be better, I will happily stay with it. If it will not, this is my fallback order
XFCE->KDE4->LXDE-> whatever else...

micia, I agree, simple is nice. Compiz on gnome is fancy enough for me.

Like this video that says it's easier to work with windows:

Why not just click the max button instead of having to drag my window around? Sounds like the title bar will also do it.

I did some testing on the Fedora one like:

I think gnome 3 will be fine without the gnome-shell, which you can do. Nothing else I have my awesome wm to use.

It took me a solid two days to get used enough to it to flow freely in it. However, I can say about the same thing about any desktop transition I made in the past two decades. I'm debating between the path through Gnome Shell and LXDE but if I'm honest with my expectations I'm leaning toward GNOME3. -Pk

I really don't like it...
I have always used the classic Gnome (at least from 10 years).
I already tried 3 times hoping to digest it! (but unsuccessfully)

The graphical management that introduces the new environment seems too forced and utterly cumbersome for me.
I would prefer that the design of graphics was focusing to allow for greater immediacy and usability, but I still feel very 'forced' in using it.

I completely agree wolfden and micia; the classic Gnome with some corrects and light enough effects from Compiz, is still more elegant and usable than Gnome 3.0.

Gonna be a bit yet I thinks

I updated my ubuntu box to 11.04 and with latest unity you have like options on the gdm screen,, unity with effects, no effects and than classic. The new Unity in 11.04 is pretty slick. On my older box I use the classic and my gnome looks same as it did before :D

I will be patient yet...
so I will can to try again to get more familiarity! :D

The last things I found strange (to my usual mode of use):
- where is Network Manager?
- Min & Max windows by dragging (only a matter of habit).
- no more Right clicks on desktop?!
- no more files on desktop?! (not a great problem, indeed very clean)

Ciao

--- edit ---
I've tried Gnome3.0 on Fedora

The no files on desktop don't bother me in the least. In linux world I hate stuff on my desktop, which is weird cause in windows world I have tons of desktop icons, but can not stand it on linux.

No min max as there is no task bar to min max to, but apparently you can right click the title bar for options tho.

I didn't notice the no right click on desktop, but I can see why it's not there, one can not interact with desktop apparently.

As long as I can keep a classic gnome like unity does, I will be ok with it. I'm not interested in gnome-shell at this time.
