fatal server error: no screen found

Postby cons67 » Fri Apr 01, 2011 15:42

Hello,

I am trying to install sabayon 5.5 amd64 e17, the issue I have is I get an error "fatal server error: no screen found" then proceeds to tell me xorg can not start.

I have hit f5 and removed the radeon and vga options, ending with the same results. Not sure if thats part of the issue, just what I could find by searching. Any help would be appreciated.

This is with a nvidia 460 hooked up via hdmi and phenom x2 550 on a gigabyte ga-ma785gm-us2h

thanks

GeForce GTX 460 uses the closed-source nvidia-drivers-260.19.x NVIDIA driver, so try pressing F5 (and removing "radeon" from the kernel boot line if it's there) and append xdriver=nvidia

EDIT: If the boot parameter gentoo=nox is present, delete that too.

Thank you for your reply. What's listed that looks like what I am looking for is radeon.modset=1 vga=791, after removing radeon.modset1 and replacing with xdriver=nvidia yields the same results, did I do something incorrectly perhaps?

Thanks so much

You need to install nvidia-drivers:
Code: Select all
equo install x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers#$(uname -r)

OK, thank you, when during the install would I install them? I have used Ubuntu and Mint over the years but this is my first go at a geento distro, I wanted something a bit "more" and..considering I am stumbling at stage 1 I guess I found it lol..

thanks for the help

EDIT: Ok, maybe a bit more detail is needed as I am fairly new to this kind of install. I currently have XP64 installed on my drive with 300 out of 600 gigs to it, and Mint installed with the remaining installed on it, swap set up on another 120gig drive. I am wanting to replace Mint with sabayon. I am not fully sure how to accomplish this without using the graphical install as its just what I am most comfortable with, yet I can not seem to get past the error message.

Your problem is that you can't boot from the LiveDVD, am I right? If I am, I don't understand why lxnay is telling you to install the package nvidia-drivers, as you have not booted to a Desktop or console yet.

That is correct, I can not get to the desktop, I can get to where I have the choice of a graphical or text instal and so on. After that it goes to start installing and then dies.

Yes, as wolfden asked, please do check the md5sum of the ISO you downloaded. It would also be worthwhile checking if the burnt LiveCD is also OK (see Checking the integrity of a LiveDVD/CD). However, I have a sneaky suspicion that the problem is due to the LiveCD not detecting your graphics card because you are using HDMI. The GeForce GTX 460 only has HDMI output, doesn't it? Having said that, SL user Sisko43 has the same card as you and is using SL successfully, so it might be worth you sending him a PM to ask him for advice.

I see that lxnay has created Bug Report 2305 to add nvidia-drivers to the ISO for the E17 LiveCD. Stand by, because one of the Daily ISO releases will have it. Keep an eye open on that bug report (see link Bugs at the top of this page) and the daily ISO issues.
