Can I Install BOINC from the Repos?

Postby chris_debian » Sat Mar 12, 2011 8:35

Hi, all!

I'd like to install BOINC, but it doesn't seem to be available in Entropy Store. I found this article about installing BOINC on Gentoo, but wondered whether I need to do the same in Sabayon.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installi ... _on_Gentoo

Can anyone offer any information?

Thanks,

Chris.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
The current release is known to work with these Linux versions:
Fedora Core 7+
Debian 4.1+
Ubuntu 7.10+
Mandriva, Sabayon, Mint, Gentoo, other Debian-based distributions

See the thread Need guidance with BOINC operation [Solved]. Current version of BOINC in the Portage main tree is:

Code: Select all
$ eix boinc
* sci-misc/boinc
     Available versions:  (~)6.10.58-r1 {X +client cuda}
     Homepage:            http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/

Thanks for the replies. I assumed because BOINC is in the Gentoo repos (http://packages.gentoo.org/package/sci-misc/boinc), that it would be available to Sabayon.

I'll have a look at Fitzcarraldo's link.

Thanks, again.

I think the problem is that I can't see BOINC in the repos. I looked at Entropy Store and also used sulfur from the terminal (which fired-up Entropy Store). Did I miss something?

It's been pulled from the Entropy repository for technical reasons (see Manual Remove message for spm-db package?). If you read through the thread that I linked to in my first post, you'll find instructions on how to install it using Portage.

Many thanks.. sorry I missed your original reference to portage; I'll do some further investigation.

Cheers,

It's a masked package in Portage now but I was still unable to get it running in the latest Sabayon release using the information in this thread.

One of the dependencies fails to compile during the installation process and it ends there.

If you find the solution to that please share as I prefer Sabayon over Ubuntu. :wink:

Not sure why you think BOINC is masked in Portage, LoneWolf_53, because it isn't:

Code: Select all
$ eix boinc
* sci-misc/boinc
     Available versions:  (~)6.10.58-r1 {X +client cuda}
     Homepage:            http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/
     Description:         The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing

and see also the official Gentoo package database on line: http://packages.gentoo.org/package/sci-misc/boinc

Code: Select all
# USE="cuda -gnutls" emerge -1vp boinc

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] dev-util/nvidia-cuda-toolkit-3.2  USE="-debugger -doc -profiler" 86,014 kB
[ebuild  N    ] virtual/krb5-0  0 kB
[ebuild     U ] net-misc/curl-7.21.4 [7.21.0] USE="ipv6 kerberos ldap ssl -ares -gnutls* -idn -libssh2 -nss* -static-libs% -test -threads" 2,204 kB
[ebuild  N    ] sci-misc/boinc-6.10.58-r1  USE="X client cuda" 11,328 kB

Total: 4 packages (1 upgrade, 3 new), Size of downloads: 99,545 kB

(The above done on a machine which is maintained using Entropy, with only lirc-0.9.0_pre1 and one or two other packages built using Portage because they are not provided in Entropy).

Obviously there's been a new development then which is good news because it was masked as you can see here...
