Sabayon 5.5 KDE AMD64 Installer Crashes.

Postby BHReach » Sun Feb 27, 2011 17:03

Started with text installer. I chose to install over the previous Linux installation (Sabayon 5.4). I accepted all defaults and when it got to the disk partitioning screen, the installer crashed. I switched to the graphical installer -> same result.

IIRC it did the same thing when I installed Sabayon 5.4. The solution was to wipe the HD and then it installed OK. I fired up cfdisk but it wouldn't load the partition table. It gave a fatal error because one of the partitions went past the last cylinder. I had to use fdisk to delete the partitions.

I went back to the text installer and when I got to the non-root user creation screen, the installer crashed. Tried again with the same result. I used the same 3 letters for user name and full name plus an insecure dictionary word for the password.

I switched to the graphical installer and it installed OK.

BTW, I think it would be better to not require long secure passwords during installation. I like to use the word 'test' for my passwords until after installation/configuration, then I use the procedure on diceware.com to create secure passphrases that are easy to remember.

I just checked the DVD's md5sum and it is OK so any problems are in the installer.

For those interested, the command to get the DVD's md5sum is:

dd if=/dev/hdb bs=`isoinfo -d -i /dev/hdb | grep "^Logical block" | cut -d " " -f 5` count=`isoinfo -d -i /dev/hdb |grep '^Volume size' | cut -d " " -f 4` 2>/dev/null |md5sum

Obviously, you need to use the device that is appropriate for your computer.

if you use the K3b disk burning utility to burn your iso's it will also read and output md5 of the iso without any extra work. it displays it toward the bottom of the user interface after you select the image you want to burn.

back to your original problem. . .
did you get installed ?

i was curious if you were changing primary partitions or resizing any partitions during the install ? iv found the installer will crash sometimes if i am edit/add-ing primary partitions. usually i create my partitions from another system then run the sabayon install to existing partitions without changing size.

when i first read your post i assumed you were just overwriting the old system and not changing partitions or partition sizes, is that right ?

k3b checks the md5sum of the iso image only, not the md5sum of the burned DVD. Since I started using bit torrent to download files, I have not ended up with any bad files.

I bought a Samsung SH-S182D/BEBE DVD Burner 3-1/2 years ago and it has not burned any 'coasters' (yet) and I have gone through several hundred DVDs of various types. Older burners were very finicky about media.

It is installed now and seems fine. I have not customized it yet, when I do, I'll create a forum message with my post install notes, they may be helpful to some newbies.

I was just installing over a Sabayon 5.4 installation, I was not trying to modify partitions. Sabayon created the partition scheme that was on the disk. It is a new 1 TB HD, I don't know if that large size can cause a problem.

thanks for the update.

you're right, the K3b only checks the downloaded image. i usually enable the "verify written data" check box when burning, and i have not had any failures yet as long as the verify is good, knock on wood.

The k3b "verify written data" does not work correctly on the version I am using. Also, the dd command I gave is faster than that k3b feature.

I reinstalled Sabayon 5.5 (over write current Linus installation) and it did not crash. There must have been some minor problem with the previous partitioning that was causing the crash.
