Black screen during installation G/K 5.5 Inspiron 8 [Solved]

Postby Gustav » Mon Feb 21, 2011 18:04

Hi,

I'm trying to install from Sabayon_Linux_x86_5.5_G.iso
but in the middle of the process the screen goes black and half a minute later thereafter my CD-drive becomes silent.

Using my camera I see that
the screen goes black at:
....
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
* Starting NetworkManager ...
modem-manager: ModemManager (version 0.4_pblablabla
modem-manager: Loaded plugin AnyData
Now it goes black

Using instead the KDE-version I come a few lines longer before the same thing happens:
....
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
* Starting NetworkManager ...
....
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Ericsson MBM
modem-manager: Loaded plugin MotoC
Now it goes black

My computer is a laptop, Dell Inspiron 8200 with NVIDIA GForce4 and I just recently installed XP and thereafter from Sabayon_Linux_CoreCDX_5.5_x86.iso on the remaining 30 GB available.
(But I then understood that I wanted more than the CoreCDX)

Please advise

Gustav

Looking at /var/log/messages on my main laptop, the video driver kicks in somewhere after the messages for NetworkManager, so I reckon you may have a video driver problem. I suggest you boot the LiveDVD, press F5 at the LiveDVD's boot menu, append the kernel boot parameter xdriver=vesa and complete the boot process and try to install. If that works then you can play with varying the video driver.

Thanks.

And so I came a bit further.
Though I need some more guidance, please.

I installed Sabayon and ran the
# equo update
# equo upgrade
# equo conf update

When I now reboot I come to the screen Welcome to sabayon.
I select Session type: Default and login.
Shortly thereafter, when the tools-icon emerges, I am suddenly thrown out back to the Welcome screen.
This is the same with the session types KDE 4.6 Plasma Workspace and others (which don't even show those icons),
except for Fluxbox and FailSafe which work.
How can I proceed?
Incidentally, the xorg.conf now has Driver "vesa".

Thanks in advance
Gustav

Try Attention KDE 4.6 users. If that does not work, try deleting /home/gustav/.kde4

No success.
Well, after having done the
Code: Select all
cp -a /etc/skel/.kde* ~/

I saw a new background like 'bubbles in space', but was still thrown out at about the same place.
So I deleted the .kde4 and saved a logfile that might throw some light?:

Yes :-)
that did it!
Thanks to both of you.

To recapitulate:
Boot Live CD > Graphical Installation > F5
"Boot options: bla bla bla --" This row is editable! Append "xdriver=vesa".
Continue installation and then run
# equo deptest
# equo libtest
# equo update
# equo upgrade
# equo conf update
$ cp -a /etc/skel/.kde* ~/ (maybe?)

update-># equo install entropy --relaxed->upgrade... I do not think the last command is still necessary :pirat:
