unable to boot into Sabayon 5.4 after installation

Postby adityavpratap » Tue Feb 15, 2011 7:15

Hi!
I installed Sabayon on my laptop alongside Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows Vista. Here is the partitioning scheme I followed -
/dev/sda4 -> /
/dev/sda9 -> /home
/dev/sda10 -> /usr
/dev/sda8 -> swap
While installing, I opted for not installing boot loader as Ubuntu had already installed Grub on MBR. After installation I booted into Ubuntu and did a update-grub as root. Grug detected Sabayon on /sda4. Then I rebooted. Now Sabayon fails to boot at the following stage -
Code: Select all
....
Activating mdev
Detected real-root as md device. Setting up device node
Scanning for Volume Groups.
reading all physical volumes. This may take a while..
activating volume groups
determining root device
mounting root ...
mount: mounting /dev/md0  on /newroot failed Input / Output Error
!! Could not mount specified ROOT try again
!! Could not find the root block device in .
Please specify ...

Any suggestions ?
Thanking in advance,

Here is the relevant part of Ubuntu grub.cfg -
Code: Select all
menuentry "Sabayon GNU/Linux, with Linux x86-2.6.36-sabayon (on /dev/sda4)" {
        insmod part_msdos
        insmod ext2
        set root='(hd0,msdos4)'
        search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 4a2b695a-1b00-4b63-a45a-2b93e388ee4a
        linux /boot/kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.36-sabayon ro root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/md0 dolvm init=/linuxrc splash=silent,theme:sabayon vga=791 console=tty1 quiet resume=swap:/dev/sda2 real_resume=swap:/dev/sda2
        initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.36-sabayon
}
menuentry "Sabayon GNU/Linux, with Linux x86-2.6.36-sabayon (recovery mode) (on /dev/sda4)" {
        insmod part_msdos
        insmod ext2
        set root='(hd0,msdos4)'
        search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 4a2b695a-1b00-4b63-a45a-2b93e388ee4a
        linux /boot/kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.36-sabayon ro single init_opts=single root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/md0 dolvm init=/linuxrc splash=silent,theme:sabayon vga=791 console=tty1 quiet resume=swap:/dev/sda2 real_resume=swap:/dev/sda2

I am doing some research to help you, but in my experience with using ubuntu and sabayon and windows I found it was easier to install grub that comes with sabayon as it detects other operating systems better

i personally also would allow sabayon to overwrite the mbr, and then grub will show all 3 os's without extra work.

as a side note iv found iv always had to leave the bootloader box "checked" to get sabayon to boot, but if i dont want it to overwrite the mbr, then click the "change" button next to the bootloader check box in the installer, and allow it to write to sabayon's /boot partition(in your case /dev/sda4), not to the mbr( /dev/sda ).

you can run the sabayon live dvd , and rerun the installer to reinstall the bootloader, you can do this without a total reinstall, but you need to click the install icon on the desktop and begin the process. a few steps in the option will appear to reinstall the bootloader only.
multi-booting Sabayon 5.5 kde 64 bit and others
intel e6600 @ 3.0 ghz core duo
6gb ddr2 800
biostar tpower i45 motherboard
nvidia 9800 gt
3) 7200 sata's non-raid
