If you do what joost mentioned and delete ~/.e/, just be aware that you may need to repeat the nm-applet autostart procedure, as I have a feeling that the E17 autostart list is stored somewhere below ~/.e/ too.

BTW, if you install the slocate package you'll be able to locate nm-applet quickly and also find a nice icon for it. You'll of course need to know where those are in order to create the nm-applet.desktop file. I'd tell you in which directory they are located but I'm no longer on my SL E17 laptop; that's now powered down. You'll find them easily enough:
