A openbox edition like crunchbang

Postby k4ph » Mon Dec 20, 2010 15:20

I believe, a lot of people like the Openbox-Manager and the handling, Crunchbang Linux started to use it. For myself I rebuild exactly that look and handling under Sabyon, including some extras.

This shows the Desktop with conky showing some direct access keys. Pressing Super+H key brings up a more complete keyboard overview. Of cause, there could be added even more pages, like one for all equo commands and the most interesting bash/zsh commands.

This menu can be generated automatically via obmenugen -s. Of cause, obmenugen must be first included into the sabayon repos. It has the ability to generate the menus based on your locale language setting.

This is the uzbl browser. It works completely via keyboard commands. After start, you press o and enter the url you want to go. If you are on the page, press fl and all links get numbers. Now you press the numbers of the link you want to follow. Very easy.

Turpial is a slim twitter client, that has the most features of all twitter clients. This pic shows it in wide mode.

... and in slim mode.

It even let's you send pictures to twitpic, and can of cause handle status.net / identi.ca too. Of cause, turpial must first be included in the repositories. Turpial needs less then 50% of the ram, gwibber uses (with much less functions), it even uses less ram then pino.

... and last but not least, dmenu.

http://twitpic.com/3hrgs5

dmenu is a one line menu, programmed by suckless. You fire it up via ALT+3 or Super+p and then type some letters from a command/program you are searching for. On the left you can see, I typed "sett" and dmenu reduces the list of commands to the ones, that include those phrase. Via arrow keys you can navigate through the short list and enter selects and starts the command.

For a openbox, that lets openbox look and handle like described here, only 9 files are needed. Openbox must be installed, dmenu and of cause uzbl, turpial and obmenugen. That's all.

Oh - and if you believe - I use too much ram, in the background are running a couple of server services - the 64bit edition runs at around 300 MB a startup, the 32bit edition uses less then 100 MB of your system. Of cause, magneto will raise that memory usage at once ;)

Have fun,

Karl

Nice idea, k4ph. As you've done it, perhaps you'd like to create a HowTo in the SL Wiki?

Actually I did build a crunchbang like openbox desktop on my sabayon looking files on a crunchbang VM.

I get all the files from the VM including menu, artwork and skel files then clean to miminum I could to to have openbox only config files. Tar files are downloadable from my page.
Openbox is very light WM and most of crunchbang apps are from xfce, I add as well equo commands I used.

I wrote a memo on my blog http://systemx.nosuke.org/index.php/post/2011/01/13/sabacrunch-Sabayon-sous-openbox-look-crunchbang.

That's may interesting for some of you but it is written in french ...
