I think if you use xdm you need to edit .xinitrc to start whatever DE you want. I might be wrong.

Alright, so I downloaded latest build of E17 spin (Ocotober 27th), md5sum checked out. I am trying it in VirtualBox, however this time I can't even reach login window, it just keeps restarting. What I mean is it is trying to load "login" SL picture then quickly goes to black screen and then tries to load it again. And it continues on the loop without "login" fully loading. Did anyone try the latest E17 spin?

Yes, I downloaded today and prepare USB stick with unetbootin
Then I booted up my AMD64 computer and it went well. install to hard disk, update. Got firefox lastest version 3.6.11

First time try E17, have not get used to navigation, but my initial comment is
1. file manager shows my USB stick with full and very long file name, thus I have to open up to very big window to see , perhaps I need to figure out how to set it just like other file manager default setting

2. Mplayer could not play my movie files so I install VLC, it worked alright, however I cannot find a way to associate the movie file to VLC , ended up I need to open vls first then open the files, go to mount point then get the movies,, kind of too many steps.

3. default fonts are very small to my already poor eyesight,, so have to learn how to make some adjustment so as not to stress my eyes.

surprisingly, it did not boot up fast.. I think it took more than one minute to boot my AMD64 computer. Some light distros took about 30 or less seconds to boot.

Well, I kind of expected this SL spin to load not as fast as light distros. One minute on your AMD64? I guess I will stick with Arch with E17 then. It is way faster. MPlayer problem is not fault of SL. I noticed this problem on Arch too, so I assume it has to do with E17. I had to use vlc also to play .vob files.
If you like to learn about linux you can try Arch with E17. It takes some time and is not a out-of-the-box distro, but you will learn many things in the process. Like tar commands, what is hal, dbus, sudoers, alsa, how to adduser etc. You might fail couple of times, but mistakes are what teaches us, right?

Apparently, my display manager is gdm. Despite searching, I can't pinpoint which file to edit in order to add fvwm, pekwm, and others to my login. Originally installed 5.3 LXDE. Crazy, but I thought there would be one overriding config file that would accomplish this. It does not seem to be .xinitrc

not sure how you installed them, but they should be getting added in scripts going into /etc/X11/Sessions/ also /usr/share/xsessions to add things. I would view those two directories for examples.

I know I should just try this but I have downloaded version 5.4 with E17 and the system just locks up before the desktop even loads. I take it this has to do with my ATI video card as 5.3 worked with KDE when I used the nvidia card. I just wanted to see if people were having any issues with the daily build before I tried to burn this and use it.
