Sabayon x86_E17 Daily problem

Postby light » Tue Oct 26, 2010 2:01

Hi,

I tried E17 spin in VirtualBox OSE. My problme is that I cannot login (just like another user with the same topic). I can of course login into fluxbox, however the main problem is that I seem to have some locale or font problem. Both login window and thunar in fluxbox have sqares instead of letters. Just like some font is missing or something. I have tried changing language with F2 in the grub boot, but no luck. I can't even provide any logs as I cannot read any dir or file names. Anyone experienced same problems?

I noticed this today:

So I assume in the next update, it should be working. Wednesday should be next release.

Wolfden,

Thanks. You saved my day!

By the way, I just have a simple question (well I hope it is simple). E17 is supposed to be quite light, so I was planning on using it on a laptop with 384 MB RAM, Celeron 2GHz. In your opinion, should I look for alternatives (arch with E17) or Sabayon E17 spin is quite fast? I am asking because generally normal KDE/Gnome spins need a better hardware.

I haven't used any of the spins, but my own, so don't know what to tell ya. All I can say is try and use which ever one works best for you.

Hmm, Celeron 2G... hope you have a dedicated display card so that graphic is faster.

I have a Celeron 2G computer with 1G Ram and onboard display. This is the slowest among all my computers, even 1.8G Pentium 4 is much faster than the Celeron 2G.
Many distros I tried are very slow , the real issue is the Celeron CPU performance is just too slow especially so when I play movie since it does not have a dedicated display card.

You probably will be better considering some very light distros that have been known to be fast and run well on old computer. On some tests I made with light distros, when playing youtube or HD movie, while CPU load is nearly 100%, the RAM usage is somewhere between 100M to 220M which is suitable for your laptop with 384M. Also I think it is not necessay that E17 is better, there are many light one like lxde, xfce, even fluxbox,JWM etc, as long as they integrate very well for your application, they will perform correctly for the hardware specs you have.
What you could do is just try a few types to compare and choose what worked well for your application.

wayne128,

Actually, sorry I made a mistake it is Pentium 2 GHz, not Celeron. And it has a ATI video card inside. I am not near my laptop at the moment so don't know what is the model. But it runs fast even SimplyMepis with KDE4 (although little slow on boot, which is why I am on the lookout for another distro/DE). I tried XFCE and LXDE, they are great but I like E17's looks and I know it is very light (by itself without bloat). Fluxbox and openbox are great, I used it for some time. But now I want to change for something else. I guess I am spolied by having choices.

Oh , nice to read that your hardware is much better than Celeron 2G.

Out of curiousity I download E17 daily and tried, haha, all squares greeted me. Cannot do anything to login.
So I don't think it is your locale problem.

Yeah, wolfden mentioned that its a problem and should be fixed in the next daily release. Supposed to be today, but yet nothing on the mirrors yet. E17 spin is still from last Sunday, the 24th.

Yeah, I am glad its not Celeron too. Of course this laptop is still old by the standards of other OS. I got it from junk store for $70 (+$20 for 256MB RAM to make it to total of 384MB).

I am wondering if the 9-29-10 build would install both wm's and then allow login to e17? or...whether it would only have fluxbox at login. I may experiment with the boss lady's computer and report the results. Also, I installed pekwm on this computer but it does not show in xdm login. .dmrc shows [Desktop] Session=LXDE I am reluctant to alter that as I may bork my main machine. Maybe need to add file to /usr/share/xsessions but I am unsure how to create it.

Any suggestions, greatly appreciated
