Flash Tutorials on Startup

Postby johnnyhay » Sat Nov 11, 2006 22:03

Here's a neat suggestion.
Add a folder or startup program on the Desktop for new comers to linux. Something like a short flash animation that explains basic functions of linux and solves the top 10 FAQ, like how to enable XGL/AIGLX, NTFS reading and writing, and etc.
I think that adding this would help out A LOT OF PEOPLE, including myself. :)

sure, flash tutorials has been in the works for awhile and I'm creating them, they will probably only be included in the dvd version with an easy download link on the desktop...or something close to that area

What sort are the top 10 do you guys think? Please give me some post here :)

Certain things are becoming easier to solve as we've greatly added user chooses to the new upcoming version, such as ntfs will be as easy as mounting through kde's pmount and such, and some of us (particularly on the ntfs mounting) have conflicting ideas :P

Here's a list I thought up...

*****************************************************************
-How to setup Wireless adapter
-How to setup XGL/AIGLX after an install
-How to install programs? Like firefox 2.0 or something similar
-How to mount NTFS partitions
-How to mount ISOs <-h**p://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Manage-CD-Images-in-Linux-39806.shtml
-How to update your video card driver. Just Nvidia and ATI.
-How to enable your "firestart" firewall or how to use iptables.
-How to troubleshoot your sound card. <-by the way, my sound blaster 24 bit live 7.1 never works with any distro I use.
-How to speed up your boot time

***************************************************************
Your could also demonstrate some linux shortcuts or just provide a list.
Then list some addition sources of How to sites. Like for more information visit sabayonlinux.org or just google.

Here's a great source for some more ideas

Hoped that helps.

Sweet Idea!!

Yeah, I didn't know I had firestarter or how to enable it until I really thought about it.
You should also probably show how to do the simple stuff, such as unlock desktop icons,
or how to use gimp. To tell you the truth I've been using linux so long I can't remember
what I found hard to learn as a newbie.

Oh, Kuroo is something to give a tutorial over. Gentoo-based distros were new to me so
even as a linux user, I had to take some time to learn that and then learn the CLI way to do things.

Hey, when you got a lot of people going "windows" cold turkey, anything to lessen the confusion helps make the transition easier to handle.
I still would love to have a flash or some video to stare at to double check if I'm getting the same results.
You don't have to talk in the video. Just use bubble comments or a side bar full of text input to describe the procedures. Also, don't forget to use time lapses and great music through out the whole thing so the audience doesn't get bored.
Once I get a hang of linux I'll be willing to help.

In any case the top 10 list should include all (or most needed) emerge commands with a small description what they do. In some circumstances, this may be needfull for more advanced users too..

Maintaining updates:

-Proper ways to upgrade (so users don't bork their systems from the get go)
-When to upgrade (don't fix it if it ain't broke  )
-Ways of upgrading (GUI/CLI)

Something that would help development:

An easy way to report bugs/errors/etc ?

easy way to report bugs is

bugs.sabayonlinux.org ;)

if there is demand, maybe we'll add a send error report to devs icon or something... but bugs.sabayonlinux.org is the preferred method of bug reporting

Postby Darksurf » Thu Nov 16, 2006 0:02

I just supposedly registered and it said it had sent an e-mail to my address, but I check my e-mail and nothing new. (its a yahoo e-mail) I've even refreshed the page and still nothing. I check the email address typed in and it was correct.
