Problem encrypted home-directory?

Postby harmon » Sun Oct 03, 2010 17:27

Hi!
First I made "/" and "/home" partitions with GParted / PartedMagic. Then I installed 5.4 Gnome 64 bit from a live-CD:
Data storage devices: Sony Memorystick and SD-card in built-in cardreader; install target device: hard disk sda...
exchange-partition Data (ntfs: windows - linux) Mount Point: not applicable; linux-data-partition (ext4) Mount Point: /media/Linux,
encrypt /home (PROBLEM??). Installation okay. Ater rebooting I got several messages:
your home directory is listed as /home/harmon but it does not appear to exist... login with / directory as your home?...

YES
could not update ICEauthority file

I had wired connection to the internet
...problem with the config server..

Then I had a green background without panels.
Nautilus could not create.../home...

Hi!
Now it works; I repeated all steps without encrypting my "/home"!!!
But I have the same sound problems I had before with live-CD or live-usb, although I started
Code: Select all
alsaconf
controlled
Code: Select all
alsamixer

and added "options snd-hda-intel model=vaio" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf!
But it's enough for today!

Hi!
For me the problem is not solved, because I would know if other users had a similar problem with a Sony notebook or if
they encrypted their "/home" with success. (I guess I made no fault; hardware problem?)
I don't know if I should say it is cleared or done; in other forums you have a choice.
But if one of the moderators is thinking, it is solved, I will mark it as solved.

I encrypted my home partition when I installed it via the anaconda installer. The problem is that it doesn't ask me for the password during the boot process like it would do under Fedora.

A (complicated) way to mount a encrypted home partition is this:
  • when the gdm screen apears: login as root to the terminal
  • Code: Select all
    cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdaX home
then it will ask for the password (X has to be replaced with the correct value of the home partition)
  • Code: Select all
    mount /dev/mapper/home home
  • exit the terminal session
  • login as user with access to the encrypted home

If I find a solution so that it ask me for the password during the boot process, I will post it here.

Maybe I will find any clues at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-840863 or http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/DM-Crypt_with_LUKS#Loading_necessary_modules.

Hi!
Thank you, but the problem is obsolete, because my notebook crashed - the complete hardware is unsuitable.
I have to decide if I buy a used laptop or a new one.

 "Crashed"? What happened?

If you want a new laptop where everything works in SL, here's my main laptop's hardware specification to help you decide on suitable controllers:

Hi Fitzcarraldo!
Thank you very much!
But the hardware problems could not be solved: first CD/ DVd drive, then some partitions of the hard disk and at least the graphic card (I could not read anything on the screen).
Now I have a Dell notebook - but problems, I will open a new thread.
