What filesystem do you use?

ext3 for /boot and / partitions, external (usb) hard drive is fat32.
Not that I know anything about filesystems whatsoever (journaling? ehh?), I was 'told to' use ext3 so I did
I already had loads of files (mostly music) on me external so I never touched its filesystem.

I have been using reiserfs for Sabayon linux. On Ubuntu I have been using ext3 FS for / and also /home. I'm waiting for the final release of Sabayon linux 5 Gnome and then I'm going to install the file system on reiserfs and /home on ext4. Ubuntu is the history so as the second distro(backup) I'd like to try Debian Lenny...

I used to use JFS, but I‘ve started to use ext4 recently. I have also used XFS and ReiserFS in the past, but I don’t use either at the moment.

I use ext4 for /, ext3 for /home (which got created when I was running Gentoo with a kernel that had some issues with ext3), ext2 for my 100MB of /boot, and NTFS for /music, so I can play Audiosurf. I really wish Steam worked better under WINE.

I was concerned at the possibility of having to use a live disk to rescue something and that live disc not being happy with Ext 4. I'm sure it's not the case now. I also have reiserfs on one system. All 3 seem good to me.

I use primarily the xfs-filesystem because of the big data-chunks(audio, video, capture) i produce. Best and quickest file-handling...

jfs can be used for booting if and only if its grub were written in the MBR, but the same jfs grub may not work if written into the first boot sector. However if the grub were into ext2, ext3 and reiserfs it should boot with both the options.

But if the linux os is of a binary installer system such as deb or rpm, then it shouldn't matter as booting via the command configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst would bring back the menu screen the same way as a chainloader +1 would do.

Earlier in my old i586 machine I had used a jfs based linuxmint-grub to boot other operating systems (opensuse, opengeu, pclinuxos-gnome, granular), but return back from other linux's grub graphical menu to the linuxmint-grub (jfs) graphical menu via the command configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Although I was familiar with the jfs boot in the MBR as a good option, I realized its inability to boot via the first boot sector's chainloader +1 only recently while trying a similar way out in my new i686 machine having sabayon, ubuntu and mandriva.
