What's your preferred Desktop environment?

I'm not sure anyone could actually 'like' KDE - IMHO you admire it as the nearest Linux is at present to a halfway-competently integrated desktop environment - a quasi-Windows of the era around W98 . . . but in an ideal world the way to go is something determinedly minimal [like, say, fluxbox], yet with enough underlying logic to give a sufficient & empathic depth of layering between the user & all possible function . . . that way we *might* one distant day get an environment as good as OS X

I like KDE and XFCE

I find doing root commands very easy to do with SuperUser File Manager - I have not found something like that in the other desktop managers. I don't mind commandline, but editing large text files on the commandline is no fun.

- it may be a bit olde-worlde; but FWIW a decade or so ago I got into the habit of using Midnight Commander [mc] for these tasks - a decent file manager as close as it gets to the command-line.

well goatee mixing the sources would produce something completely different and probably contradicory. do you mean that the developers should all just work together on one?

sometimes i do wish all the developers would just work together on just one and make it perfect, but that is probably not going to happen which is very sad becasue i can hardly imagine what would be produced if programers with such different ideas in mind were to work together.

probably be something with a whole lot of features like kde but really streamlined like fluxbox (ya i already said above that it would be contradictory but great none-the-less)

e17 is pretty usable as long as you get a good install the first time and don't update it I would suggest following the gentoo-wiki howto and you'll be enjoy bleeding edge e17, its beautiful

man...was I the only one who choose fluxbox? ehehehehe

I found the gentoo wiki for e17 hard to follow.

I am suprised (e17) is going to be the wm for the new PS3 Yellowdog linux.

Well i downloaded Gnome 2.16.1 and I am making myself use it for 1 week to give it a fair opinion and so far I like it. It's easy to use and have done a lot of customization already to suit my taste. I can see myself using gnome regularly. So currently my desktops on my machines include Gnome, KDE, and Fluxbox. I feel comfortable in all 3.

well that is key, especially when helping "newbies" as you need to be comfortable in all the environments to help new linux beginnners
