Unnecessary quoting

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Sat Nov 21, 2009 13:45

I am left wondering why some members quote the immediately preceding post when replying to it, as it uses up server space unnecessarily. Here's a fictitious illustration of what I mean:

Just bought a secondhand laptop with the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 GPU but it does not work with the fglrx driver ati-drivers-9.11. What should I do?

Thanks in advance, Huey

The fglrx driver no longer supports older ATI GPUs, so you'll need to install the open-source Radeon or radeonhd driver.

Why bother quoting the preceding post? I could understand it if there were several posts in between the original post and the reply, or if the topic is contentious and the person replying thinks the original poster might edit or delete the original post, but normally this is not the case and it is obvious that you are replying to the previous post. Quoting previous posts, especially if they are long, just stores more text on the forum server for no useful purpose. I know disk space is cheap these days, but still it is worth keeping quoting to a sensible level: thousands of unnecessary quotes over several years could amount to a lot of wasted server space.

Just something to bear in mind.

I agree.

Then again, I have the same exact thought process about most things that people do. People like to do a lot of things without solid reasoning or logic, that's just a fact of life.

You know, this is a very good point, haven't even realized it at all till i read this post, now im gonna see it everywhere!!! But I think the reason people might do that is because its like a way of looking someone in the eyes over a forum when you mean to talk directly to someone.
