Restoring Virtualbox after update? [Solved]

Postby e1kk41 » Wed Apr 14, 2010 21:02

Hi, I have problem that probably is easy to solve but after 3 weeks of Googlin I still can't solve this..
I did a fresh install from 5.1 to 5.2. Of course I made a copy on an external HDD of my home directory.

The problem is that on 5.1 i had Xp running properly on Virtualbox, but I didn't make any export OVF, just a plain copy of .Virtualbox and the whole home folder
Now when I have 5.2 running smootlh I am not able to recover my data from the ext.HDD => I get the infamous "blue screen" and reverted back to Windows Xp startup.

How should I proceed, what data do you need and how do I gather them.

Thank's in advance hope that you can help me out :?

I have only done something similar with 5.1 but what I think I did was to start Virtualbox and create a new machine with the same parameters as my saved one. Then closed Virtualbox and copied across the ./Virtualbox/HardDisks/XP.vdi and I think ./VirtualBox/Machines/XP/XP.xml from my backup. I may also have copied across ./VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml and ./VirtualBox/xpti.dat.
Sorry this is a bit vague but I can't remember the exact sequence. I may even have copied the above across before starting Virtualbox. What I can say is that experimentation worked and I found the right combination in the end. Best of luck.

I had this problem. I was using a different virtual HDD controller in Vbox settings after the new install. Maybe try changing your hardware settings in VBox.

Hello and thank you for the fast replies, I have been trying very, very, many different combinations and also clonehd and other Virtualbox commands, I get near but I still can restore my snapshots and latest inputs, working on it....
I will report any success as soon as I got this sorted out, :)

Finally solved, but.... not a hi-tech way, anyhow after trying all possible and impossible
things I ended up totally re-installing sab 5.2. After that I copied the .Virtualbox folder with all itś contents
from the ext HDD back-up, and after that I installed virtualbox with Entropy,....voila I also got all the snapshots back.

So a "sucess" in the long run , but there is probably a more elegant way to do it :?
