Segfaults with vmware-hostd in libc-2.10.1.so after [Solved]

Postby hardtarget » Mon Apr 12, 2010 19:35

Hello,

I've been running VMWare Server 2.0 for quite a while, but decided this morning to run through a system update via Sulfur (300 packages were updated). After finishing and rebooting the system, my vmware-hostd process is segfaulting like so:

Code: Select all
vmware-hostd[1680]: segfault at 2100001c4f ip 00007f0dcf0d66a5 sp 00007f0dcd30cdc8 error 4 in libc-2.10.1.so[7f0dcf05c000+14c000]

There's nothing really in the hostd.log that says what may be going on, though this entry does look a little suspicious (not sure if it's related):
Code: Select all
[2010-04-12 11:08:25.290 'Libs' 139697315964656 warning] rasterScale: failed to load pixops library from /opt/vmware/server/lib//lib/libpixops.so.2.0.4/libpixops.so.2.0.4: /opt/vmware/server/lib//lib/libpixops.so.2.0.4/libpixops.so.2.0.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Has anyone seen this, and is there a way to "fix" libc so it doesn't cause vmware-hostd to segfault? I am using the vmware overlay (vmware-server-2.0.2.203138) along with vmware-modules-1.0.0.24-r1, and have re-run the vmware-config.pl multiple times to no avail.

I tried moving to Sabayon 2.6.33 kernel and rebuilding vmware-modules, but it still segfaults. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I also tried upgrading to app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.26, to no avail.

Not yet, I am running through another set of upgrades (192 packages to be updated), and if it still doesn't work, I'll file one then.

Ok, still having the problem. Should I file this against Sabayon or Gentoo, since I'm using VMWare installed from portage?

Did you try to recompile the package after updating?!

Ok, I think I figured it out. According to this Gentoo bug (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=292771), if you sync portage and ensure you have "vmware-server-2.0.2.203138-r1" installed (along with updated zlib-1.2.5, which should be in Sulfur already), it shouldn't segfault anymore (which mine doesn't) on startup. Problem resolved.
