sabayon as server?

Postby anomaly65 » Fri Apr 09, 2010 10:48

Hi folks,

I've got numerous old servers (some 6+ years and running without full re-install only updates) running gentoo for server services (e.g. mail, web, etc).

Anyone had experience replacing such with sabayon? Main concern is the stairstep function in some major upgrades. Not always silky smooth.

Sure would solve a lot of time spent compiling updates and hoping for the best.
Thanks,
andy

backups indeed.

done, but the servers tend to be thousands of miles away. Not so much fun when things don't go so well.

thx,
andy

Sabayon is primarily Desktop distribution, and I appreciate it :)

I've heard of a Calculate Linux - gentoo-based server solution. It's a strange distro made by russians - it uses two root / partitions to make updates smooth :) (Google OS seems will be using this way of doing things, too)

Also, maybe try Sabayon Core?

Sabayon is an interesting distribution they have something for everyone and the artwork is nearly always good. Unfortunately sabayon seems to crash as I'm editing the profile which is displayed in the xnest session. I do get asked to send the contents of the sabayon log file to a bug list, the problem is the log file doesn't exist.

Re: sabayon as server? [SOLVED]

After looking at it all, I concluded while Sabayon has "awesomeness" in the desktop arena, and is very good for a local (where you can easily touch the box when needed) it might not be ideal for remotely located servers. I've got several that are all over the planet, and the reach factor makes me cringe each time an upgrade comes along.
I do have a number of gentoo servers that have 5years+ since initial install, and there have been a few major gotcha's during upgrades.

Thanks for the input though.

cheers,
andy

Been running my LAMP on Sabayon since 3.5, migrated it to branch 4 then to 5.
No problems for me.
