Only using portage- is this feasible? [Solved]

Postby rootless » Sat Nov 28, 2009 20:51

I would like to use portage for everything... I shouldn't come into too many file conflicts if I ONLY use portage, right?

I suppose I'll have to use equo to world update right after I install, but after that, all installation will be done via portage... I've also been thinking of doing the most minimal install that I can, removing a bunch of packages that I don't need, and starting from the ground up.

Does this sound feasible? I RTFM, but mostly all I read is warnings about portage breaking equo packages, not to edit make.conf, etc. There seems to be a load of info about Equo, but not much on portage. I know how to use emerge just fine... but only in Gentoo.

So, I shouldn't run into too many dependency problems if I ONLY use portage to emerge everything, right?

It is feasible, and is basically what I do on one of my PCs. I install from the LiveDVD, world-update it using Entropy and from then on stick to Portage.

(Avoid using Entropy after that, especially Entropy world updates. The SL Wiki articles tend to concentrate on Portage doing damage to Entropy-installed packages; well, the reverse is certainly true too: Entropy can well and truly trash a Portage installation if you're not careful.)

Yeah that's what I noticed- that's why I asked. I borked my first install by editing make.conf and mixing package managers!

I know much more about Portage than Equo... it's really the reason why I'm using Sabayon in the first place- GENTOO!

By the way, why don't you try the SL Core LiveDVD? Rather than removing packages you don't want, start off with a lean install and build up. A new Core LiveDVD is due out shortly -- see the SL Blog (a.k.a. Planet) for further details.

Ah, good idea. I'm downloading the Core DVD now. I didn't see it before- I was only looking for sabayon 5.0, and the latest Core DVD is 4.2.

Does this matter? I should be able to just do an "equo hop 5" before I world update, right?

As a brand-new Sabayon Linux user, what should I watch-out for so that my system does not break?

I have done an update of approximately 140 packages from the "update notifier" (is this entropy/sulfur?).

Now that my system says that it is up-to-date without any new packages available,... what is the next step so that I will stick with Portage as you guys have suggested?

Thank you.

If you're a brand-new SL user then my advice would be to stick to Entropy (GUI is Sulfur; command line interface is Equo) for the time being. Then later, when you have more experience, you can start to investigate Portage, which is more complicated. Please do read the articles on Entropy and Portage in the SL Wiki (see link at top right of this page).
