What do you mean by: gdm starts but the Desktop has no panels and icons? That when gdm starts, it displays a login screen with various menus exactly as it should but when you log in, there are no panels or icons?

You can always restore your Desktop to the pristine original look, as on the live CD, by replacing the relevant configuration files and directories in your home directory with those in /etc/skel/
(use ls -a /etc/skel to see them).

after login screen appears only wallpaper without the upper and lower panels. it became so after pulseaudio configured according to instructions (http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup) in Sabayon 5, in Sabayon 4 was normal

I had a similar problem: installing enlightenement package broke my Gnome Desktop, and after I removed enlightenement, Gnome became totally dysfunctional.

I was informed by Ian Whyman (Thev00d00) that I could restore Gnome desktop to its original look by replacing relevant config files and directories in my home directory with the corresponding files and directories in /etc/skel. I did that (specifically, I first removed from my home directory .config, .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome, .gnome2, .gnome2_private, .gtk*, .metacity, and replaced them with the corresponding files and directories from /etc/skel). To be on the safe side, you can move your old configuration into a subdirectory, say, old-config.
