Portage is not rsynced? Fracked up installer... [Solved]

Postby tetris11 » Sun Oct 18, 2009 22:07

Hi, I have been having huge problems with Sabayon since I first installed, but have managed to waste the day getting rid of most of them.
Now that I'm done complaining; I am left with a very simple, but very SERIOUS problem: I cant emerge anything.
Code: Select all
#emerge vlc
Calculating dependencies ... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "vlc".

That's not right....

Code: Select all
#emerge portage
Calculating dependencies ... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "sys-apps/portage".

I am at a loss to why I cant emerge anything.

To top it all off when I click on Entropy Repository Manager (the only application I can find on the system that looks like some kind of package installer) it comes up with Entropy Service Connection Manager. Fantastic.

Is it something to do with rsync? If so, help!!!

Hi, welcome to the Sabayon Forums.
You should read some documentation on the wiki about entropy and portage :D
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Entropy

Sabayon has a binary package manager, entropy, it has a TUI (equo) and a GUI (sulfur);
and a source package manager, portage, which has a TUI (emerge) and many GUI you can choose from (portato and others).

Probably you should run:
Code: Select all
emerge --sync && layman -S

before trying to install something with portage.

Aah thanks.
I probably should have warned you earlier that I had no idea what I was talking about.
Am currently trying your method. Keep you posted.

EDIT: Ok yep, everything is working as it probably should.
Thanks!

just as an advice, the first thing you should do after installing, is updating entropy
(this is not really needed if you plan to use just portage, but since entropy is by far more user-friendly,
it is commonly used as the main package manager).
You can do this running as root:
Code: Select all
equo update
equo install --ask entropy equo sulfur

equo update is as emerge --sync && layman -S it updates the package list with the latest packages
available, the second command will update the package manager.

Will do, and thanks for the help >> I honestly thought that I could never trust a gentoo based distro (after actually failing to install gentoo), but you have restored my faith in the distribution¬
