What filesystem do you use?

Postby TheWhiteDemon » Wed Aug 19, 2009 1:39

I was using Ext4 with Sabayon, but I recently reinstalled Sabayon after trying Fedora with Ext4 and I'm now using ReiserFS. It probably has more to do with a fresh install than with the filesystem, but my system is definitely more responsive and faster at transferring multiple small files from an external hard drive than it was with Ext4 under Fedora or Sabayon.

Currently only using ext3. Not event try ext4 and also the reiserfs yet... :D
What is the difference between them?

Cause i'm using the ext3 file system is the journaling for auto data backup. But it will have the inode problem when there is a huge volume of files (about > few hundred thousands of text files) inside the partition, causing the inode full and can't create/write to a new file... :(

I had to vote "other" because I use 3 different file systems on 3 different machines and various partitions. Principally I use Ext 4 but used Ext 3 on one or two partitions when I was concerned at the possibility of having to use a live disk to rescue something and that live disc not being happy with Ext 4. I'm sure it's not the case now. I also have reiserfs on one system. All 3 seem good to me.

ext2 for /boot partition, and ext3 for the / and /home partitions.

I vote other, because i really use many...
generally, much mainly i use reiserfs, because is more hard to break, and in my city, the electrical power easy switched off, loosed undfer rain, and reiserfs have a good journaling system, and more easy to recover in case oj breakage...
but sometimes, in boot partions, i also use ext3 and ext4.
for /home, sometimes i use jfs and xfs.
Nowdays, until now, in Sabayon and many other linuxes, jfs, xfs and Reiser4 cANNOT USED AS BOOTABLE PARTITIONS,
only ext-2-4 an reiserfs are bootable
the differences are many. In the net exists large documentation. in generally, people said that ext3 and ext4 are faster for read but reiserfs is much more hard to break and their journaling system is more eficient.
for data jfs and xfs are considered better,or at least, more "modern".
Also in literature, reiserfs is the recommended system for Gentoo and Gentoo based distros.

Wow, is that true that reiserfs is the recommend for Gentoo based systems? Why is that, any particular reason?

I haven't heard such claims, the handbook talks about em here
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... #doc_chap4

It's more of a preference thing, use the one you want. I've used ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs and all work fine.

I like how Daniel Robbins explains it himself
These days, a lot of people are trying to determine which Linux journaling filesystem is "best". In truth, there is no one "right" filesystem for every application; each one has its own strengths. This is one of the benefits from having so many next-generation Linux filesystems from which to choose. So, instead of picking an arbitrary "best" filesystem and using it for every conceivable application, it's far preferable to understand each filesystem's strengths and weaknesses so that you can make an educated decision as to which one to use.

This is more of a personal preference when selecting a file system. I set the /boot
part to ext3 . I then do the / part to reiserfs and if I have a second drive /data to
ext4. I also, through in a swap part in too. Mostly double that of the system ram.

Right now hard drives are getting bigger every few months now. I can remember when
40 GB drives where big ... an office talk of having drives bigger where a waste of
money and resources ...

An now .... drives are getting in the Tera byte range ... I figure on large drives
a file system like reiserfs or ext4 should be used.

ext3 for /boot and / partitions, external (usb) hard drive is fat32.
Not that I know anything about filesystems whatsoever (journaling? ehh?), I was 'told to' use ext3 so I did
I already had loads of files (mostly music) on me external so I never touched its filesystem.

Think I'm gonna (have to) read that handbook chapter Wolfden linked to...
