wireless issue. [Solved]

Postby Zunden » Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:27

so..i'm having an odd problem with sabayon 4.1 wireless. my wireless works in most cases...but if i go somewhere with a lot of photos, streaming video, or if i try to download files i get discconected. i don't get any error message or anything..it starts to load the video/images/starts downloading and then the connection just freezes...and then if i try to go to another website it gives me the site unavailable message...according to wicd and iwconfig i am still connected to my network...but when i try to ping it says host unreachable. the only thing that fixes it is to reconnected manually...but then i go back to the video or whatever i wanted to see and it does the exact same thing again...i was originally using network manager but i had this problem..so after making sure i was using the iwl3945 driver i decided to install wicd and try that instead..but i get the same problem. i also tried changing the mtu value from "auto" to 1500...but it didn't make any difference. i'm also not really sure how to find out what mtu i should have for my router and connection type, i googled it...but i didnt find any info that helped me. and i don't know what else to try. if anyone has some ideas i would appreciate it.

here is some iwconfig/ifconfig/lspci/dmesg info aquired immediatly after a dissconnect:

What version wicd are you using, if using wicd-1.6.0 (has been troublesome for some) try downgrading to wicd-1.5.9-r1 (using sulfur- Install from binary package, if still on your hard-drive) or update to wicd-1.6.2 (emerge wicd)

Or you could try wicd-1.6.1 download wicd-1.6.1 for branch 5 and install using sulfur- Install from binary package
http://svn.sabayonlinux.org/entropy/sta ... 6.1~0.tbz2

Both wicd-1.5.9-r1 and wicd-1.6.2 are available via emerge

Hope it helps

i installed wicd 1.6.2 but it didn't make a difference. i think since network manager and wicd are both doing the same thing the problem has to be something else...

thanks for the input joeoden. but i shouldn't need ndiswrapper since my wireless card uses the iwl3945 driver. and in any case i am now certain there is nothing wrong with the way my computer is setup. i spent last week at my sister's house..and my wireless worked fine there. they use a wrt54g v5...it's old..but it is setup identical to my router at home, right down to the ssid, channel, and security settings(i know because i set it up). it didn't kick me off once... so now i'm pretty sure it is because of the new router that i just bought...and coincidentally i switched from ubuntu to sabayon at the same time...and i thought "how could it be the router"...

Are you using both? Is recommended to del nm after installing wicd.
I have ran both with no errors, then on the next system got some weird errors, best to use one or the other.

OK, If you are sure you have the problem solved, can I ask you to edit your original post and marked it solved?
When others do a search... will usually go to the ones that have been marked solved first. Often these issues can be hardware related as in your case, and people do not always check their hardware. Just blame it on the os. :(
Amazing what a simple reboot of a router / modem can cure also.
