The above is your wireless config

So if Network Manager is not working for wireless try modprobe ndiswrapper as pepe999 suggested

If not working after that then reboot computer and install wicd (don't forget to rc-update del NetworkManager and rc-update add wicd then reboot) if you use Sulfur it will install version 1.6.0 (this doesn't work with my notebook but does for others) try it first and if it does not work then do emerge wicd (this will install version 1.6.2)

If you do install wicd 1.6.2 in Preferences - General settings tab check to make sure that eth1 is selected for your Wireless interface (mine is eth0 yours should eth1 according to your iwconfig)

Hi there Peppe,

Need your help now. I would need step by step instructions on first,

to install ndiswrapper------- links where do I get one. The link you gave maybe directly installs the driver without ndiswrapper?? Pl comment on that. it also has a note on how to install the BCM4312 in a linux kernel. If it can be done in that manner then maybe we do not need the ndiswrapper at all. or of you could point me to a link which has the instructions that would be good.

The one you gave on the driver , should be good enough??

ndiswrapper should already be installed all you have to do is in a terminal type
modprobe ndiswrapper
Then see if you have wireless connections available by clicking on the Network Manager icon

I just updated my notebook and after updating dev-python:pyopenssl-0.7 my system would no longer start in the GUI only a tty console (same as pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 keys) and a message saying wicd could not start, so I press Alt + F7 keys which takes me to the login screen I attempt to type in my login password but nothing is typed in to the edit box, so I scratched my head and swore a lot while pressing keys on keyboard and then after awhile I get a lot of ******* characters showing so I delete them and retype my login password and the GUI works but of course no wireless networking

So I reinstalled wicd and the same thing no GUI or wireless, so I rc-update del wicd and rc-update add NetworkManager then rebooted, this time login window worked and started GUI, Network Manager loaded but wanted my password which I typed in but it did not work (was the orignal problem and why I installed wicd) so I opened a terminal as root and typed modprobe ndiswrapper and still no wireless

So I deleted the connection I had setup in Network Manager and create a new one (which is the same) and wireless is working the only thing I have not tried is restarting the computer, I suspect that I will have to modprobe ndiswrapper, delete connection and create a new one again

At the moment do not install wicd (I am having what we call fun with wicd on my system)

Yes I had to do all again but wireless did not want to connect, so I rc-update del NetworkManager and rc-update add wicd and reinstalled wicd

At the moment do not install wicd (I am having what we call fun with wicd on my system)

I tried wicd-1.6.1 with sulfur but no go, so I emerge wicd and this time I got file collisions so I deleted the listed files and done emerge wicd again, and this time wicd-1.6.2 installed with no problems, rebooted and wireless is working again

Hi Guys,

FInally got WICD working. Just realized that the problem was that you have to add to the user group and took help from the threads to do that. I installed wicd thru sulfur, so must be a downgraded version.

However though it show its connected the IP address given is wrong. One the signal strength is very low ( with windows XP have a good signal strength). Another when I open Mozilla no page gets loaded and I get a error message.

questions :

1. Need the command to add user to the user group.(have already done that but I do not remember now how I did that.
2. How do I upgrade this one to the latest wicd?
3. Why is a wrong ip being shown (in the router I have given only a range of IP's).

This is strange. Why you have to add some user to user group? I've never seen it before. Never mind..
I've been using WICD 1.6.0 and no problems..
I don't know your IP address but some routers or hubs have range of IP addresses like 192.168.1.64-192.168.1.124 etc..
It's a bit complicated and you need to know something about networking..
Start from the beginning. Use ping to find out the troubles..
1: set any IP address to your wifi adapter(110.100.200.1) and try ping 110.100.200.1
If you get reply, wifi is working correctly.
2: ping to your AP(access point, router, HUB..)
If you get reply, you connected to the AP..
3: check DNS(system/administration/network)..
4: if you still have no connection, tell us..

With all the info that has been given to you in this thread you should know that the latest version of wicd is version 1.6.2 and you install it by typing in a terminal as root
emerge wicd

Upgrade to the latest wicd

Some people (like me) are having problems with wicd version 1.6.0

FInally got WICD working.

Please mark this thread as solved, and start a new or search other threads for the rest of your problems

Hi Joe and Peppe,

Thanks for your help and support, finally my WLAN is working and I am sending this post from the Linux platform on wireless. This is using Network Manager only.

Here are the steps :

Go to root.

First check lsmod ---- to see of ndiswrapper is in it. ndiswrapper comes along with 4.2. If not then modprobe ndiswrapper.

Copy the windows driver into a separate directory. If its a zipped file then you can extract the contents straight away using the file browser itself into the same directory.

The extracted files should contain the inf and the sys files. In my case it was bcmwl5.inf and bcmwl5.sys.

then ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf after getting to that directory which has the extracted files.

This would install the driver.

Check if the driver is installed by ndiswrapper -l

You should get :

Rajkumar rajkumar # ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4315) present (alternate driver: wl)

then do a ndiswrapper -m

modprobe ndiswrapper

and you are done !!!!!!!

My hardware is a compaq CQ40 317TU.

First do not use any password in your wireless setting in your router, just to check. then you can try different

combinations of security settings (there are certain things which Sabayon does not work with-- for example WPA1 & WPA2). Mine worked with WPA2.

If you could point out certain links where I could learn more, I would be thankful.

Now to setup my mail client etc etc-----.

The audio issue still remains though. Will go after it soon.
