A small problem getting to kdm [Solved]

Postby bowhuntr » Mon Jul 13, 2009 23:39

I am new to sabayon but liking it very much so far. I just installed a few days ago and everything is working as hoped but I am having one small glitch getting to the log in screen or kdm.

It worked at first but now I have to hit F2 for verbose mode and I then get a init3 login. I can log in as root from there and type kdm and I then get my kdm login screen.

Not really a big deal but I would like to know what changed and how to fix it.

Thanks and I am really looking forward to running sabayon. I have been running linux now full time for about 3 or 4 years but it has always been on a debian based system and I am looking forward to running something else.

/etc/conf.d/xdm has kdm set for displaymanager but doesn't say anything about login manager.

Which log files would that be?

generally, problems caused by erroneous video board driver...

please, first make this command and see the output, then gets the newest kernel installed:

Code: Select all
su
eselect kernel list
eselect kernel set NUMBER when NUMBER is the number of the latest installed kernel..

then close session, reboot ans boots in grub, in the newest kernel..
then, in than bash, login. make these commands:

Code: Select all
login: root
root password
equo update
equo install equo
equo install nvidia-drivers nvidia-settings
eselect opengl list
eselect opengl set nvidia

Then,if you is still in the bash, without X try:

gdm or kdm, or startx or if neither works,

Code: Select all
cd /
cd /etc/init-d
gdm restart

also try renaming the .Xauthority file in your home directory to something else so it can get rebuilt.

The fix for this for me at least was to edit /etc/conf.d/xdm and replace kdm with kdm-4.2

So far this seems to have corrected the problem.

Thanks guys
