LVM2 resizing.

Postby lameismyname » Tue Jul 07, 2009 12:37

Hi,

I made this post here cause my problem is hardware/software like and I couldn't find better place.

Ok now the problem. My current situation looks like:

I have a 160 GB SATA II harddrive where Sabayon 4.2 is an operating system. When partitioning I gave it full space of phisical drive for ext/lvm2 partitions.

info from gparted:

Partition || File system || Mount Point || Etiquette || Space || Used Space || Free Space || Flags

/dev/sda1 || ext4 || /boot || /boot || 101.94 MiB || 25.94 MiB || 76.00 MiB || <none>
/dev/sda2 || lvm2 || <nothing> || <nothing> || 148.95 GiB || --- || --- || lvm

Now I want to resize lvm2 partition cause I wanna make 60-80 GiB NTFS partition for windows 7 (just for gaming).
How? The catch is that I don't want to format & loose my data from linux partitions. Just to take some space from lvm2 partition.

I know lvm2 is a bit different, please give me some advice.

I don't know much about LVM, but it seems to be a tricky endeavor to resize them. I saw on a different board a similar question and someone used this program to resize his lvm2 partition. http://evms.sourceforge.net/

Concept is still the same, umount , fsck, resize2fs , lvresize. Just be careful with the resize2fs when shrinking, if the new fs is smaller then the total space you'll more then likely destroy the data.

Assuming that you've correctly split the file systems within the vg you would be able to do this without a reboot.
