Black screen after fresh install

Postby iLucian » Wed Jan 30, 2013 20:12

I just installed Sabayon latest version, MATE desktop, x86 architecture, and now when I boot all i get is a blank screen instead of a login screen.

I see the pre-login stuff on the framebuffer but then it goes black. I can change to command line via ALT+CTRL+F1 and I see a lxdm-binary with children X and lxdm-greeter-gt (via pstree).

So I assume it's a X configuration issue. How do I deal with this?
Also, I didn't have internet on the machine during install if it's relevant.

Do you use NVIDIA graphic card on an elder system?
Then it could be this: Nvidia legasy-card users having black screen with latest ISO'S

Edit: Oh, yes. Logs. I was out for dinner, sorry.
Login on a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F2) as user and create a paste:
Code: Select all
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | pastebunz
.xsession-errors

Sadly, the latter one couldn't pasted with pastebunz on my machine :-/

Nope, I have some intel on-board HD graphics card. And my system is relatively new with an AMD Phenom II
None of the other OS's I've installed had this problem (Ubuntu, Mint). But thanks for posting your idea.

Now I have another problem. It seems the install just messed up my Ubuntu install. It fails because it "could not get boot entry" :(
What has Sabayon done to my system?

Now the liveCD (well usb) doesn't want to display X anymore. This is getting better and better.

EDIT SO NOT TO TRIPLEPOST

OK, somehow I got it working by killing X from the command line. I killed it then the login screen appeared.
But now there's something else: Sabayon won't see my smartphone when I connect it through usb. And that is my only connection to the internet (tethering) for the desktop. Guess I'll skip sabayon until some kinks are ironed out or I get a normal internet connection. Any ideas on how to fix my Ubuntu? :)
