Problem with Emacs installation

Postby fbr » Thu Jan 10, 2013 18:10

First day with Sabayon and everything has gone well, with one exception, and that is trying to install emacs 24.2.

I am using Sabayon X KDE. I installed from the command line, then uninstalled and tried again in Rigo. When I try to run emacs from the terminal I get the following message:

Undefined color: "WINDOW_FOREGROUND"

I have no idea how to troubleshoot the message. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, a quick question, when I ran equo and rigo looking for emacs I got 300 some returns and in no particular order, or at least no order I could determine. Is there a way to get results back sorted alphabetically?

Thanks in advance.

uhm . Did you change theme or using default theme (about WM) ?

run Emacs in a terminal and report its output.

No, I did not change any theme's. I have not been able to open it.

run Emacs in a terminal and report its output.

I posted the output trying to run it from the terminal in my earlier post. That's all there is. And, W]when I installed it neither equo nor rigo reported any error messages or warnings.

I tried uninstalling emacs24 and then installing emacs23. I received the following output when uninstalling v24. I noted the line in bold. I'm not sure if that's the clue I'm looking for but it sure looks suspicious.

After installing v23 I received the same error message when attempting to run the program from the terminal.
Undefined color: "WINDOW_FOREGROUND"

I hope this information will be useful. I'm an org.mode junkie so Emacs is a critical application for me.

I see that you're using "sabayon-weekly" repository
https://packages.sabayon.org/show/emacs ... 5,standard

I'm using sabayonlinux.org repository
https://packages.sabayon.org/show/emacs ... 5,standard

and I installed app-editors/emacs-24.1 and worls fine for me (Xfce) .

As you can see the same package has ~1 revision in "sabayonlinux.org" repository. Maybe this version revisited fix your problem.

Well it gets stranger... I decided to change the wallpaper and when I hit the open button in order to import a wallpaper image, my screen went black, however I could still access Yakuake via the f12 function key and the music I was listening to continued to play. However, nothing else worked, so I shut down using the terminal. I rebooted and my screen had changed, same wallpaper, but panel now on top, and only one application launcher. I then clicked on emacs from the menu and it opened, the cursor danced around like my graphics card was going crazy for a few seconds and then emacs finished opening and things settled down.

It's still quirky, when emacs opens I can access files, but it opens in the scratch buffer and there is no GNU Emacs buffer page/window but other than that it appears to behave normally and at least one other application has some windowing problems and I can only access dropbox utilizing the terminal. (Both functioned normally prior to the crash and restart.)

So, I'm guessing my graphics card and Sabayon are having some issues getting along.

I will look into the sabayonlinux.org repository. But right now, I'm getting a bit nervous about the quirky behavior.

Sounds like you need to visit the log files and see what is going on
