Fresh install... Again - Space requirements [Solved]

Postby PennyRoyal » Wed Jan 09, 2013 17:10

Apparently I only learn by completely borking my system. No biggie, but I am getting tired of copying/copy back my /home directory. I'm going to set /home on it's own partition this time. So how much room do I need for the OS? I want to boot from the root partition. Will 40gb be enough? I looked on wiki but I'm not sure how current that info is. I would not have more than 2-3 kernels installed at any given time. I have 24gb of ram, so I don't think I need a swap partition?

(Why 24gb? 'cause it fit... )

Should be fine, depends what you use and what you do, I guess. I've already got 5GB on / and that's a brand new KDE with bare bones stuff installed. 2GB on /home and I've got no video files for editing on yet. It will fill up rapidly though and 40GB for me would be too small. For what I do I usually go 40GB / and 200GB /home. All work moved immediatley off to external storage. Very basic set up but works for my needs.

Thank you Butch Cassidy for the timely reply. It follows what I was thinking. I'll be dividing 100gb 40/60 for a KDE install. I regularly move my personal data to a backup drive, so I don't need a huge /home partition. Again, thanks for the feedback...

40 for / by me is playing it very safe. You could easily do 30 /70 if you wanted.

After numerous updates my / partition is still only using 16GB, so I would say 40 is more then enough...
