2 beeps and a blank screen [Solved]

Hi,

After yesterday's updates, that's what I get - 2 beeps and a blank screen with a flashing cursor.

Ctrl-Alt-F1, login as root, startx -> (II) [KMS] NoDRICreatePCIBusID symbol, no kernel modesetting.
(running Sabayon 3.60.0 r6, I have included nomodeset in grub.conf ?)

Xorg --configure -> FATAL : Module nvidia not found
(lshw and lspci confirm that there is nothing nvidia on this machine, AMD chipset and Radeon HD 4670 / RV730XT graphics.
I did find a 95-nvidia-settings in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ which I moved out of the way without any change.)

(EE) in /var/log/Xorg.0.log :
failures to load nvidia and i915
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices

I am stumped here, Google searches point to enabling KMS and disabling fb in the kernel, is a kernel compile called for here or some silly thing that I have overlooked ?

eselect opengl set xorg-x11
and deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Switched from ati to xorg-x11 and problem solved!
(Why - I do not know)
The screen quality does not seem to be that good but I'll get to that.
