installation without CD / DVD / USB storage medium

Postby oui » Wed Nov 07, 2012 0:36

Hi

I am completely newbie in sabayon, gentoo or other distros builded from sources. I have 3 DELL Optiplex SX270 with Pentium or Celeron and a laptop with AMD64.

I will try to install sabayon but have a question

installation without CD / DVD / USB storage medium

possible or not?

(as my CD drive don't work any more, I usually start the ISO or kernel and initrd through Grub2 directly from harddisk)

second question:

my purpose is to work with the most actual version of calligra (esp. calligrawords). i would prefer WITHOUT Kde (because Kde is so terribly slow on all my PC's...)

what would be the most adapted iso to use?

kind regards

To answer your first question: Yes, take a look at this article on the Sabayon Linux Wiki site. http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... nux_system

If you want a fast system, try using the Xfce edition of Sabayon. You can install Calligra on there without needing too many kde dependencies.

Or...you can follow the instructions in the above article on how to install Sabayon "the chroot way," and when the time comes for you to install a desktop environment, you could install Razor-Qt. Calligra wouldn't have any problems running on there. Razor-Qt is basically a lightweight version of KDE, without all the configuration options, widgets, plasmoids, etc, so it should run quite well on your computers.
Every time I compile Gentoo I feel like I should sacrifice a goat.
