Something wrong with Grub? [Solved]

Postby dizwell » Mon Oct 15, 2012 1:13

New to Sabayon. Fresh install, which seemed to go fine. Then updated everything. Now, when I reboot, I get the error "Error file not found" three times, then the messages "Loading Linux" and "Loading initial ramdisk" followed by "Press a key to continue". When I do press a key, the bootup resumes and appears to complete without a problem. I would like to know what files it's looking for that it thinks it can't find and work out why they're missing or what else I need to do to fix the problem.

When I checked /var/log/messages, I see this bit right around boot time:

Code: Select all
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Getting session 'gdm-shell'
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Looking if /var/lib/gdm/.config/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session is a valid session file
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): Cannot use session '/var/lib/gdm/.config/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session': non-existing or invalid file.
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Looking if /etc/xdg/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session is a valid session file
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): Cannot use session '/etc/xdg/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session': non-existing or invalid file.
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Looking if /usr/share/gdm/greeter/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session is a valid session file
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): Cannot use session '/usr/share/gdm/greeter/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session': non-existing or invalid file.
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Looking if /usr/local/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session is a valid session file
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): Cannot use session '/usr/local/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session': non-existing or invalid file.
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Looking if /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm-shell.session is a valid session file
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Launching helper 'bash -c 'gnome-shell --help | grep -q gdm-mode && /usr/libexec/gnome-session-check-accelerated'' to know if session is runnable
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Checking required components and providers
Oct 15 10:03:31 dirac gnome-session[9329]: DEBUG(+): GsmUtil: Looking for file 'gnome-shell.desktop'

There seem to be four 'looking if' messages there, though I only see three 'file not founds' during the boot process, so I don't know if that's related at all.

Any thoughts?

I had the same problem when I updated from GRUB 1.99 to 2.00

Try this:

su
grub-install /dev/sdx

Replace "x" by your HD's letter.

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Thanks for this. I am getting the following response, however:

Code: Select all
dirac ~ # grub-install /dev/sda
bash: grub-install: command not found...

Am I missing a package or two?

Appreciate that. The revised command works perfectly and has fixed the 'three errors' problem without further drama. Thank you all very much
