Some of the basics - Repositories, packages and Cinnamon

Postby Palmer » Wed Oct 10, 2012 23:11

Hello all.

I am new to Sabayon forums, but not necessarily new to the Sabayon distro. I used to use Sabayon v2.5, 3.5 and then stopped at 4. Not sure why, but then I skipped all versions between that up until the current 64 bit version. Anyways, I am not familiar with Sabayon or Gentoo based systems anymore. I just got it installed and I would like help with some basic things.

First, I would like to figure out what package manager Sabayon uses and how to use it. I could probably just use Wikipedia and figure out what the name of it is, but I was hoping for a bit more in-depth information on it. I have been using Debian and Debian based systems over the past few years and I am in the habit of opening Synaptic up to install/uninstall things (you know, instead of doing it via CLI).

Second, how can I add repositories? Would I just add it to /etc/apt/sources.list repository file?Again, too familiar with Debian based systems. Or Ubuntu where you use Apt and add a PPA repository... But I am sick of Ubuntu's instability.

And last, part of the reason I am asking for the above two things is because I want the Cinnamon shell. I have GNOME 3, don't like it very much and I love Cinnamon... So how would I go about installing it on Sabayon GNOME?

I did do a quick search and could not find the answer so I'm hoping you all can help.
Thanks in advance.

The wiki is the place for you my friend.

https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... Management

As far as installing cinnamon goes, pick your package management (Most use equo and it is better supported by these forums) and simply install the cinnamon package.
Code: Select all
#equo install cinnamon

pretty simple eh?

Just as a side note, there aren't very many side repositories for Entropy, but there really doesn't seem to be much of a call for them either.

Ah, sorry. I did not notice there was a wiki. I was in a hurry and didn't search much. Thank you, I will try that.
