How to install rpm or deb packages

Postby jeancf » Thu Sep 27, 2012 10:38

Hi,

I am a long time OpenSUSE user and I wanted to give sabayon a go but I have a last minute hesitation.

I use a number of applications that are not in the Sabayon/Gentoo repos. One example is Nixnote (sourceforge.net/projects/nevernote/) that can be downloaded as a deb or rpm package. Can entropy/equo manage these packages as well (i.e. including dependencies) the way Yast/zypper does it with rpm in openSUSE for example? I don't want to have to sort out dependencies by hand (I actually tried for nixnote and failed).

Thanks,

JC

There is an ebuild for Nevernote in the Portage scrill overlay, so Nevernote can be installed using the Portage package manager or you can file a request (click on the link 'Bugs' at the top of this page) for it to be built and added to the Entropy repository.

Thanks. It is at version 0.99 while the latest is 1.3. But anyway, my question was less about Nixnote than the ability for entropy/equo to manage .deb or .rpm packages.

I read further in the meantime and I think that the option does not exist today but please confirm.

Thanks,

If you want specifically to use .rpm and .deb packages then you would be better off using a distribution that has a package manager specifically designed for .rpm or .deb packages.

Portage and Entropy have a package called rpm (you can see an example of its use in the post Re: installing BitDefender scanner for unices) and various tools such as deb2targz and others, but, as I say, if you specifically want to use .rpm and/or .deb packages, use a distribution that is designed for those packages. Entropy has its own package format and is not designed to handle .rpm and .deb packages.
