kernel upgrade and blinking cursor

Postby JaTh » Fri Aug 17, 2012 4:33

Hello, I'm posting in this place hoping you won't tell me to RTFM

This is the 3rd time I've installed Sabayon 9 KDE, why? because the first time I tried to install the approximately 300 updates but Rigo froze before finishing so I closed it, after rebooting I wasn't able to boot (got a blank screen and a blinking cursor) so I installed another distro. The 2nd time I decided to install the updates one by one, after maybe 10 successful updates (just some programs I know about like libreoffice or wine) I got something like "Application not Authorized", rebooted and once again got the blinking cursor.

I found this thread but decided to create a new one instead of posting there. Apparently the kernel upgrade is causing the blinking cursor problem. It says here that
The kernel image is not upgraded automatically

 Is that correct? because I didn't manually upgrade the kernel and still got the blinking cursor.

I haven't updated anything on my current system and after some reboots everything is working correctly.

 So, do I need to do what it says here (on "3/21/09 Update Information") after updating and before rebooting?

Thanks.

Unless you manually installed a new kernel version, it shouldn't be pulled. The easiest way to upgrade kernel on Sabayon is using kernel switcher.

Unfortunately you don't provide any useful information, but I suppose it's rather an xorg/driver issue. Sabayon upgraded lately a new xorg version which in combination with proprietary drivers doesn't support some legacy graphic cards any more.
Sabayon gives you tools to gather all needed information, the one is sabayonlive-tools and the other the command cookbug (Sabayon Bug Report hardware information collector).

I would suggest, you grab the latest daily release, which solves the issues related to the xorg/drivers update, and install that.

As a newcomer, you can't just bypass reading the useful manual. It's crucial for you to know, what to do after fresh install.

Hi. I think isn't kernel issue.

Did you read Entropy News via Rigo or equo ??

if you have ATI GPU please see
http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php? ... 05#p151199 and other threads or https://bugs.sabayon.org/buglist.cgi?qu ... st_id=5658

Could you provide more informations ?

It seems my problems got worse: I tried to install sabayonlive-tools so I first used "equo update", but got this

And I wasn't able to continue.Maybe that happened because the first 2 times I didn't use "su" before "equo update"? but after that I used "su" and also "equo update --force" with the same result.

I was able to run cookbug, you can get the result here (I wasn't able to attach it).

Maybe I should really install the daily release, even though I don't know what's xorg (I do know that 1 XOR 1 = 0  )

I did read those news, however I'm using a low-specs laptop and I'm pretty sure I've an integrated intel graphics card, nothing like ATI or nvidia.

Just tell me how do I get the information you need and I'll provide it.

To find graphics:
Code: Select all
# lspci | grep -i graphics

You may just need to update your video drivers, although you can't connect to the repos. Is this problem fixed for you? If so after you run the command above, you should
Code: Select all
# equo search <your video card>-drivers

If the installed version matches your kernel, then it's not that. Let me know
