Newcomers to SL (Sabayon Linux) must understand how to use this distribution's package manager, Entropy
. This is not optional; as an analogy, you cannot drive a car unless you learn how to drive first.
There is an article in the SL Wiki that explains how to use Entropy, not surprisingly titled Entropy
. Please ensure you read it through carefully. Apart from explaining the Entropy commands you will need to use, it also explains what you must do immediately following installation
, how to upgrade the kernel (NOT done automatically, for good reasons), how to select different mirrors, how to optimise the order of the mirrors, and how to roll (upgrade) your installation.
A final note: Many users seem to forget that, after installing a package or upgrading their installation, they should run the command equo conf update
to upgrade configuration files. Not every package requires this, but it won't do you any harm to do it. If you do not do this, you will run into trouble. It's not done automatically in case you have edited manually an existing configuration file and wish to keep it.
