(EE)Failed to load "dri" module [Solved]

Postby stressat » Sun Sep 20, 2009 10:32

Hi ! I'm sorry for my poor english, i'm romanian !!!
I installed Sabayon 4.1x86 /Gnome on my machine. After equo update, xServer does not start, instead appears the next messages :

(EE) Failed to load module "dri"(module does not exist, 0)
Fatal: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.29-sabayon/video/nvidia)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module

I replaced in /etc/X11/xorg.conf line Driver"nv" with Driver"nvidia", without results.
I installed again nvidia driver ( equo install nvidia-drivers + eselect opengl set nvidia), without results.
I downloaded nvidia driver Nvidia-Linux-x86-96.43.13-pkg1.run + installed it ( sh Nvidia*.run), without results.
I readed posts from forum,i tried revdep-rebuild + /etc/init.d/gdm restart.

My configuration : AMD 1,9 Ghz procesor +
NVIDIa.GeForce4 MX440 with AGP 8x video card +
OS : Sabayon 4.1x86/Gnome ( now after the update the wallpaper indicates 4.2)
Opengl sets on nvidia.
Please tell me what i can/must do.
Thank you for your patience !

Which kernel is installed?

Can you post the output of:
Code: Select all
eselect kernel list

and the output of:
Code: Select all
equo query installed nvidia-drivers

Also, remove the drivers installed from the Nvidia site,
you could obtain surprising results having both the drivers from equo
and the drivers from the Nvidia site. :)

Thank you for your answer.
eselect kernel list:
[1] linux-2.6.29-sabayon ;

equo query installed nvidia-drivers :
>> @@ Searching...
>> @@ Package: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-185.18.14#2.6.29-sabayon branch: 4

I'm newbie on Sabayon, i used until now Mandriva and Ubuntu(almost 1 year).In Mandriva/Ubuntu i have nvidia-driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07(11/13)-pkg1.run, not 185.18.14...My video card is nvidia.geforce4 mx440 with agp 8x.

The output of eselect kernel list is:
Code: Select all
[1] linux-2.6.29-sabayon *

not ';', isn't it?

I think that it could be the problem, that card is not supported by
that driver, you should install the legacy versions:

Be sure to remove the drivers from Nvidia's site, then install the 96.43.09 version.
Code: Select all
equo remove nvidia-drivers
equo install --ask nvidia-drivers-96.43.09
eselect opengl set nvidia

Then try to reboot, hoping it worked :D

1) The output of eselect kernel list is :
[1] linux-2.6.29-sabayon ( without *);

2) When i tried to install nvidia-drivers-96.43.09 :

if the kernel is not selected it is bad.
Select that kernel using:
Code: Select all
eselect kernel set 1

and search for that version of the drivers:
Code: Select all
equo search nvidia-drivers

you should find some drivers for your kernel,
the version in my post might be different.
Basically any 96.43.XX driver should work, once you find it,
specify the version of the package manually, something like:
Code: Select all
equo install --ask nvidia-drivers-96.43.XX

Thank you!!! I did it !
After eselect kernel set 1 output of eselect kernel list is : [1] linux-2.6.29 *.Next i search nvidia-drivers , and install one with command :
equo install x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.09-r10#2.6.29-sabayon ( equo install --ask nvidia-drivers-96.43.xx does not work).
Thanks you again, you are very nice(and very good) !!!
